Fred Zoller – Show Notes
Fred Zoller graduated from SLU with a B.S. in Kinesiology emphasizing human movement. He has attained numerous training certifications and has read and studied every ounce of material he could get his hands on related to health and fitness.
During his career as a fitness coach, Fred began with private personal training in 1996 and teaching nutrition seminars in 2005 stemming from his career as a natural bodybuilder. He has worked with a wide variety of clientele, from general population clientele to several top level athletes, State Champions, and professionals in a multitude of sports.
A sought after expert, Fred is invited to speak to a number of organizations each year on topics such as fitness, nutrition and motivation. For the last 2 years he has spent much of his time developing his new training facility and his coaches branding his very own training philosophy, which has been successful for years.
Recently, he is a student of World Renowned Martin Rooney, the founder of Training For Warriors, one of the top fitness coaches in the world. He is devoted to changing the lives of every single person he comes across on a daily basis.
Fred played baseball all throughout grade school, received a scholarship and played college baseball for two years. He then stopped playing baseball and he was looking for something to keep him in shape, which led to him lifting weights. Soon after, because of his competitive nature Fred decided to do a bodybuilding show and hired a trainer to help him.
“I decided to venture out a little further and do a bodybuilding show because I am very competitive and felt like I wanted to continue doing something in the competitive realm.”
After being successful in two local shows and having a great experience with his trainer, he decided to get certified and started training others one-on-one within the next two years.
As a personal trainer in the community, Fred was able to maintain a full schedule of clients. After 10 years as a personal trainer, trading his time for money and working long hours, Fred had a new vision.
“I started getting the itch to kind of do my own thing.”
While working in a big powerhouse gym, he recognized that there were plenty of trainers but no one really had clients or was making any money. By noticing this gap and reaching out to the people who owned the business, he found himself creating a training program for the gym. When the gym started to take notice of the success of the trainers, Fred found himself more involved in the business side of things. Within five years Fred was training, recruiting, handling the marketing, putting together all the programs and even designing uniforms. It was at this point that he realized he was doing all the things that needed to be done to start his own business.
“I just was a feeling uneasy everyday about coming to work and being an employee for someone else. I don’t want to have a ceiling anymore; I want the opportunity to be able to grow and be responsible for everything that I am doing on my own.”
When Fred first opened his first facility, he knew the clientele he had wasn’t enough.
“I had to realize there is not going to be more hours in the day, so there has to be more money in the hours.”
He learned how to effectively leverage his time, and started offering semi-private sessions only and eliminating the personal training completely.
Very quickly after this, he was in a position where he was growing so much that a new facility was needed.
“I had a vision you know; I had a vision of a business that I didn’t do all the training and that I would have more free time at home.”
After moving into the new building, Fred struggled paying two leases and not being able to find employees that were a good fit. As a result, he shares that he was in hardship for the better part of a year.
“I’m still here today, I made it through it and it taught me a lot, but I stuck to my vision.”
He realized that he had to work on his process and systems if he ever had to step out of the business at any point.
Fred looks back and talks about how he went from that year of struggle to where he is today. He attributes his success to two things: getting business coaching and being around like minded people, as well as discovering the need to build systems.
He started program called The Expert Coaching System, as well as an internship program partnering with the local college.
With Fred’s new systems and processes, he was able to pass a lot of tasks over to the other trainers in the facility so he had more time to work on his business and focus on marketing.
Today Fred spends his days working on marketing, developing ideas and coming up with lessons for coaches. He is able to be there for his six children and even go on vacation from time-to-time. His business is at a point where he doesn’t need to be present for it to run successfully. He still does coaching each week, but he says it’s a different feeling now.
“Now I’m doing it because I want to do it, because it’s fun versus scrambling everyday to try and make an extra dollar.”
Fred says throughout this process he has learned what his strengths are and what was fun to him.
“My job is where I want it to be. I wake up everyday and I’m so excited I can’t wait to get to work.”
