Hey, Pat Rigsby here. And today I have my special guest, my lovely wife, but this is audio, so you can’t really tell. We’re going to jump into this episode because we’ve got a lot to cover. Let’s get started.
Welcome to The Fitness Business School podcast – the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen til the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
All right, well, this is exciting for me. Normally I do these episodes by myself and today I’ve kind of wrestled my wife into coming and participating kind of against her will, but she she’s being a good sport about it. And she’s gonna talk with us about video in the role that it gonna play in your marketing in the upcoming year. So welcome Holly. Well, I’m so excited To be here. Thanks for Inviting me. I’m not even sure that that’s true, but that’s okay. That’s okay. Well, Holly has, has been doing video as not only a marketing tool, but a relationship building tool’s since gosh, somewhere around 2007. Is that right? 2007. Yep. So, so this is not new for her, but clearly if anybody’s paying attention and in spite of the fact that we’re doing this VI audio video has really kinda moved to the forefront as probably the most powerful marketing tool available for fitness business owners. Would that be your estimation? Absolutely. Man. These one word answers are just fabulous.
Yeah, they’re great. so, so tell me with the, the things that you see fitness professionals struggle with when it comes to video, could you throw out two or three things that you see really kind of get in their way? Yes. They overthink the type of content that they can share on video. They think they have to be very he and cover everything all at once. When video is designed to be delivered in snackable bite size pieces. So you can break down any type of content that you want to deliver to your people and it can be, and nowadays it can be as short as seven seconds. So our goal as video marketer is to take the content that we talk about day in and day out and look at how we can break that into dozens of different topics that can be turned into video content. So I obviously, I mean the way that you just phrase that sounded I mean, it sounded good. It sounded like like, like there’s some, some thought behind it, but still people people may know, but they’re not doing so. So where do you think they’re getting hung up? They’re comparing themselves to everybody else. they think that they need to be like so and so in the same industry and they’re not good enough when in fact video is the only way that is gonna help you to stand out against everybody else, because nobody does it the way that you do. I like that. I like that. So authenticity sales, especially in a very crowded market where there are a lot of big brands that are kind of impersonal and in, in many cases kind of faceless.
So there, there are a number of options available to somebody if they want to start using video that, I mean, you know, Facebook lives and Instagram and YouTube and TikTok and all this stuff. How does somebody navigate all the, the varied platforms and formats and all that fun stuff? I think the best place to begin is find out where your people are, where does your target market market hang out the most and start showing up in that sort circle, start showing up and be seen, start looking at the things that they are, the things that they are engaging in, where they’re asking their questions. So, so where they’re asking their questions, that that’s kind of a good prompt. One of the things that we talk about very regularly when I, when I talk to to business owners about more marketing is it’s just not that complicated. Your prospects have questions, you answer their questions. So would that line up with what you’re saying? I mean, if, if they’re asking questions, can the, the business owners just go on there and answer them via a video? Absolutely. And then that way they get to know who this person is that has a solution. They get to instantly connect with who that person is. That’s delivering that message and decide, is this the person for me? Very good. Very good.
So what’s the, the easiest way or the quickest way for somebody to gain some proficiency being on video? Well, Do it, I mean, if you wanna get better at something, then you need to practice it. And the hard part about that is you have to be okay with being bad in the beginning because that’s the only way that you can get better. So how, like, like let’s put a, a frame work around this. How, how long should somebody commit to practicing? How frequently should they do video? If they’re really excited about getting into video and seeing this as part of their marketing plan over the next year and beyond, well, I say set up something, that’s a realistic parameter. Everybody talks about 21 days to form a habit, but we know that somebody just made that up, but I’m like, if you can create a period of time where you’re like, I’m gonna commit to the next 14 days of showing up every single day, prove to yourself, give yourself the evidence that you need, that you can, can do this. Then from there, take a step back reassess and say, all right, I did 14 days. I’m gonna do it again. And then give yourself kind of like thinking about how we do interval training. I can be on for the certain period of time, take a break, assess and be on again. So did you just make up that 14 days is how long it takes to go to have it? No, okay. I just wanna, I mean, I that’s how things happen, right?
Like somebody just says it on a podcast and next thing you know, it’s true. so do, do people need any sort of special equipment lighting, microphones, anything like that to, to, to get their video playing in motion Without Paul looking at me? No. All you need is your phone and some natural lighting. So some natural lighting and your phone, and next thing you know, you can be a video star I love or an influencer. See, Paul, I learned I was an influencer not too long ago, so. All right. Well, do you have any other video tips? Any other suggestions, anything else anyone needs to know when it comes to video as part of their marketing plan? Yeah, I think one of the other obstacles that gets in the way of creating video is being, it’s like the people think of it as public speaking. They think that they’re get in front of this giant audience of people and it makes ’em really nervous when all you have to do. I mean, it’s just you in a camera lens, all you have to do is look into that camera and pretend as if you’re looking into the eyes of your favorite client, because that’s how you get your marketing message across. It calms the nerves. You become very casual with your conversation and the delivery of your content, and you make the connection, which is the whole purpose of creating video. All that was weird. You didn’t look in my eyes while you were doing all that talking or anything. I was pretending I was talking to my favorite client. Thanks. alright, so, so that’s great.
No, that that’s wonderful. I mean, I, I think from a business owner’s perspective or, you know, the, the thing that, the things that I talked with them about, I mean, marketing’s just not that hard people had to be aware of you. They have to know that you can help and you have to give ’em some next steps to, to get into motion and with what you just said, that awareness and knowing you can help seems like it’s not that far away. If you follow this plan when it comes to video. So Holly, thank you for taking the time to join us, Paul and myself on this on this fun and impromptu episode about video, It was all my pleasure. And maybe you’ll invite me back again. We’ll See. bye. Bye everyone.
