Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in today’s episode, I want to talk about how I know when I’m being successful and how you can know too. Let’s get to it.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
We have our mastermind meetings coming up over the next couple weeks here in in Louisville in the fall. We do mastermind meetings here in the
summer. We’ve traditionally done ’em here and sometimes also mixed in a trip to Chicago to tie things in with perform better events. And then in winter, we’ll go to Florida when it’s sunny. We may even mix it up in the upcoming year. But, the, the point, I guess is, man, I can’t wait to see the people who, who are coming and connect with those folks. I think, you take that stuff even a little bit for granted maybe four or five years ago before the pandemic,
when we didn’t have the opportunity to do it. So getting to see a group of people I enjoy, is always a wonderful thing, and, and knowing that they’re coming here to, to pursue meaningful things in their lives makes it a a, a real highlight of my year. So this sort of thing got me thinking about my goal of
creating my ideal business, since that’s what I, really kind of set out to help people do when I sold my steak and several things I was involved in a few years back, and, the people that are part of this, yeah, we, we work on marketing and selling and all that stuff, but it’s all with the, the goal in mind of building a business that you love.
Not just a revolving door, not just something bigger that creates stress, but something better as well that feeds the life that you wanna live. So I borrowed an idea from my mentor and friend Dean Jackson to create a short list describing how I, how I know when I’m successful. So I figured I’d give it a look and kind of hopefully maybe inspire you to develop your own. So, so here we go. I know that I’m being successful when I can plan my professional life around my personal family life. Now, that may seem kind of counterintuitive, but that’s basically how I map out my week every week when we’re like I do my planning on Sunday for the week. Holly does hers on Friday, but I go ahead and basically commit to the things that I’ve already said are important to me family-wise, and then I build out the professional stuff around that. I know I’m being successful when I can wake up every day and look forward to who I’m spending my
time with personally and professionally, online and offline. And I, me mentioned I was so excited to see the people to mastermind. I’ve got kind of this weird litmus test that I use for bringing clients into our kind of interactive coaching programs. The, the programs where they have access to come to
live in-person meetings. And it’s basically this, because we do dinners at my house for the masterminds, we hold here in Louisville and we do dinners, like close-knit stuff. We spend a lot of personal time.
It’s not just like there, there is no real, kind of lecture type of feel. It’s all very close knit. It’s all very connected. It’s not me speaking to a crowd or the other team members just speaking to a crowd. It is us there helping to solve those, those attendees problems, helping to move them towards where they want to go. And so when I think of this, it’s like, if I don’t look forward to you being my guest in my home, then you probably own a good fit for this program. And I don’t want to be like, I’m not trying to be snarky about it or whatever else. It’s just, I want to create a culture and environment where everybody is open and willing to share and excited, to connect with one another. And then I know I’m being successful and I’m excited about my business and playing a role that I can
both enjoy and do my best work. There’s so many things that go on in my business and any other business, yours, I’m sure, that are not are just not probably things that, that you or I, get excited about. I don’t even know that we dread them. They’re just not things that light us up.
And so I try to choreograph my role and my business around things that I’m really good at and that I’m excited about doing, and then I know I’m being successful and my income allows me to both invest in my family’s financial security and also experience the things that we want to, experience now. And some people really get caught up in the, the shiny stuff. They want to show off pictures of Lamborghini and private jets that they probably, in many cases leased for the day or something like that, take photos on. But even if they own ’em, like, those are not the things that drive me. Like the things that drive me are, experiential with my family and creating kind of a bedrock that, that everybody’s long term success and happiness can be built on.
And then I know I’m being successful and my business is relatively stress free. And you may be laughing with the, the, the possibility of a business being stress free. And trust me, I grew up in a household where it was never stress free. There was always money stress, there was always stress
about, oh, there’s just not enough, business walking through the door or whatever else. And, now I would tell you that, I definitely derive far more stress from helping my younger son with sixth grade homework or coaching youth baseball team than I do from entrepreneurship, which is something that I made a point to, to shift to seven or eight years ago and it’s worked out wonderfully. And I know that I’m being successful when I only work with people.
I enjoy colleagues, clients, and members of my team. Now, I know I touched on this a little bit as far as the client part, but I think that, I mean, so much of, of life is relationships. And if you’ve paid any attention to anything that I write, really anything else that I say, if this is not the first podcast you’ve listened to, you’ve heard me talk about the role relationships play in everything that I do. And so, I want to work with people that I enjoy, and frankly, I try to just detach
from the, the ones that I don’t now, that doesn’t mean I wish ill on anybody else if I don’t enjoy ’em or whatever else, but the way I kind of think of this is there are literally billions of people on this planet that, don’t know I exist and that I probably don’t know they exist.
And the ones who kind of drag me down as an anchor, I just kind of wanna throw it back into that pool and, focus on the people that do lift me up and that hopefully I’m doing the same for. And then I know I’m being successful and I can reduce my role in the business for a vacation, or when life circumstances require it, and the business still can deliver a great service and experience as well as meet my income needs and meet the income needs of the people on the team. So, you know, I want to be involved in the business. Some people talk about like wanting to to be an owner altogether and never be part of the operations and never coach people, but I love doing this and I get fulfillment out of it. And, as long as that is still the case, I want to be involved, but I also want to be
involved in a way that doesn’t make things entirely dependent on me.
And then I know I’m being successful when I can work from virtually anywhere. Now, obviously there are plenty of advantages to not being kind of the, the, the suitcase entrepreneur, so to speak, and traveling around me having a family and being able to, prioritize them, having relationships and having some stability. I think that’s wonderful. But I like the idea of being able to pack up most of the things that our involved in my role in the business into a backpack and go wherever I need to. It gives me great peace of mind in so many ways. And then, the last thing, well, the last two things I would say. I know I’m being successful when I’m seeing meaningful impact being created in the lives of our clients and team members. And a lot of people love to talk about they’ll show social proof, on, on social media. They’ll show, oh, hey, this Jim Flood program got 92 people in my gym in the last 30 days.
Or, we got two high ticket sales for $7,500 or whatever else. And they’ll show that stuff and they’ll catch people like in the moment. But what they don’t tend to show is building something that matters, right? They don’t show, well, hey, I was able to build my buy my first house or pay off my home or build my dream home and pay it off, or finally take vacations with my family and the business succeed. Or, be able to finally, both be putting money away for retirement
and take vacations or send my kids to private school or whatever else. Those things that, that come, from this kind of more stable, lasting success, not the temporary, Hey, this tactic worked, but then, you look up and I can’t tell you the number of people who flooded their gym with countless people, before the pandemic with some, you know, some challenges and filed bankruptcy within a year so knowing that I’m seeing success in the lives of the people that I’m serving, the team members that I’m serving and collaborating with, that’s, that is true joy. And then finally, I know I’m being successful and I have
flexibility. I’m definitely not somebody who wants to have a regimented, schedule that never changes. I don’t want to have constant standing appointments because I want to be able to be adaptable, and I want to be able to, to change things up as needed.
So now that’s my 10. I’m not sure there’s any magic it magic in it being 10, but like I said, I borrowed Dean Jackson’s kind of framework for it. And I, and I’m not suggesting that any of my 10 should influence yours or should, be be similar to yours. But what I am saying is you, a lot of times we set these destination goals where, when I have a certain type of house or I drive a certain type of car, or we have 50,000 a month in gross revenue, or we have 200 clients, I’ll be successful. For me, this stuff is a much better barometer. Like, how is my experience on this planet? Like, what’s happening on a given day in a given week? Are these things true? And if they are true, then I know I’m being successful. So hopefully this is valuable to you. I know it’s been valuable for me.
