So rule number seven in creating your ideal business is that you must enjoy a flexible schedule. Now, when I say flexible, I don’t mean freedom. So bear with me as I kind of talk through this right early on in business, we feel like business owns us. And in many ways it’s just it. You know, it’s a full on commitment. It’s a little bit like having, having a newborn, right? A newborn is entirely dependent on you. A newborn is not at all self-sufficient but you know, as you parent your child, they become more, self-sufficient more independent over time. Well, that’s kind of what we’re trying to do with a business, right? We understand the beginning. It needs lots of our attention, right?
We’ve just created a really challenging job that places a lot of responsibility on our shoulders. And there’s not a lot of immediate gratification, but over time to have your ideal business, you have to move forward. You have to create some guardrails, a and kind of set some, some internal rules in place for how you’re gonna be spending your time. And if you want to build your ideal business, you probably want to have some flexibility in your schedule. You want to be able to take vacations. You want to be able to coach your kids sports teams or attend their Scholastic event. I mean, I’m going to Alex’s fifth grade promotion, the like literally the moment I stop recording this podcast. So, you know, I got that built into my day. You wanna be able to take some weekends off some evening time in our industry? You know, that’s the, that’s not the norm right there.
There probably aren’t 5% of the people in our industry that ever get to that kind of flexibility because we’re working opposite hours are traditional jobs because clients are coming to us before or after work. But just remember, because your business delivers a service to people coming in at hours or on days, you don’t wanna work. Doesn’t mean you have to be the deliverer of those services. At those times, you can be the person facilitating those being done. You can be the person coordinating delivery of those services, making sure those services are delivered at a high level. You can be the person empowering your team to deliver those services. So you can step away and build a happy, fulfilling life as a business owner. The ultimate schedule goal of having your ideal business is to be able to work in some ways on your terms. It doesn’t mean you don’t work.
We all have plenty of responsibilities. You have to deliver value to own your ideal business, significant value, right? That’s what you provide in exchange for the comp compensation that somebody gives you. When someone says, Hey, I want freedom. What they’re really suggesting is they want flexibility. Cause freedom kind of implies you are free from any obligation or responsibility. So what we’re really talking about in business is creating as much autonomy and flexibility as we can possibly have. We’re working more on our terms.
If there are days or even weeks, we need to take off to do certain things, whether it’ pleasure or just obligation. If we want to travel an ideal business should give us some flexibility and offer us autonomy to build a schedule that we want to work over time, right? And that can, that can evolve. That’s a moving target. So you can enjoy the lifestyle that you deserve for the impact you’re having as a business owner. That’s the ultimate goal, right? To be able to work in the way you want to work, not feeling like man, I have to do this. no, you want to be able to have maximum impact for the people you serve and the team you employ, but do it in a way that provides you the income and the flexible lifestyle that you want.
