I do a lot of coaching calls or host a lot of meetings with business owners. And it’s interesting how they will regularly talk about what they don’t want. I want to work less. I don’t want to train as much. I don’t like doing the things that I’m doing here, so I need to delegate it. And they, they talk about these things they don’t want. And it doesn’t seem like it’s working for them. Right. I think we’d all be better off. If we started from that opposite perspective, what do we want? And then we start filling our time with that. Sure. Some may think that this is like just some antics or some sort of, kind of woo woo mindset perspective. But here’s how I think it works in practice. Let’s say that I’m hosting a mastermind meeting with people in town here. And I get home from that meeting in the early evening. Well, I can say I don’t want to work anymore tonight or I can go play catch with my son, Alex. Now the former might stop me from doing stuff I wasn’t interested in doing, but it doesn’t mean I’m doing anything better with that time. Right?
If we want something better for ourselves, we should probably be clear about what better is because different provides no assurance of better. So how, how can this work in practice if we want to, to achieve certain things, if we want something better for ourselves? Well, here are the things that I focus on and maybe, maybe this little process will be of some value to you. The first thing that I do is I set some goals that, that stretch me, but they’re attainable. If it’s not realistic, it’s hard to maintain motivation because it just seems too far off. It seems too distant, but if it’s not challenging, it’s probably not going to inspire us. So stretch goals that are attainable, that’s that’s number one. Number two, I think we need to be specific saying I want to make more money as vague saying, I want to add a hun, you know, a a hundred dollars a day to our revenue saying, I want to add a thousand dollars a month to my personal income within the next three months. That’s specific and kind of backing that. The next thing we need deadlines. When I said three months, that’s a thing saying, I want to add a thousand dollars from my personal income, but not having a deadline. It means I can just push things down the road and focus on what’s urgent now, instead of what’s truly important to me. So we need deadlines for everything. And then this one, this one’s kind of interesting me, but it’s something that I, I had to come to grips with.
We need to actually want the things that we’re saying that we want. It seems simple, but you’d be amazed at how many people set goals, because someone else told them that should be their goal or that’s what they think they need. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve said arbitrary, gross revenue goals, or goals to reach certain numbers of franchises or clients, or when certain awards or whatever that when I got there, it didn’t mean anything. We need to actually want the things we’re pursuing and then no mistake. We need accountability. We always do better with accountability. And in fact, I tell clients time and time again, accountability, a bigger part of what you do when you’re serving your clients, because it’s the missing piece. It’s the secret sauce for most people, they have access to, to, to workouts, to information, to equipment. They need accountability to stay the track or stay the course and be consistent to stay on track. So we all do better with accountability. We know it. So having an accountability partner, having a coach, being part of a mastermind or peer group, we need it. And then we’ve got to break things down.
We need to avoid overwhelm. We do better when we break things down into manageable bite sizes, these pieces, and then we need to, again, once the prize, right, we need to see this finish line. This is partially why challenges work so well in our industry because there’s a finish line, there’s a prize, a prize, a not just a monetary or a tangible external prize, but a trot prize of losing 20 pounds in six weeks, or, you know, a swimsuit ready physique or something. Yeah. Like that. Right? So when you get away way from, Hey, these are the things I don’t want. And you start to get clear about what you do want and what it takes to get there. And you spend your time on that. You’re filling your time with valuable things instead of just creating a void. I mean, I remember having a coaching client who was really, you know, really successful. And you know, now he’s a successful business coach, Vince Gabriel, and early on when, when we were working together, Vince had a nice business and he was clearing off his schedule in the mornings. And he said, okay, I’m not going to work in the business anymore on this stuff. And I’m gonna leave this time open. It was like nine to noon or something for marketing. And then, you know, after doing this for like a month, he came to me, he said, I’m not getting anything done with marketing because he got rid of the things he didn’t want to do, but he didn’t have clarity on that.
Next thing like it, he had a block of time that he had created for marketing on his schedule, but he didn’t have specificity. He didn’t have a goal. He didn’t have the, the, the deadline or breaking things down. He, he didn’t have these other steps in place. So yeah, he knew what he didn’t want, but he didn’t know what he did want to do at that time. And then once he figured that out, his business took the next leap forward. And I think the same will happen for you. Don’t just talk about, Hey, I don’t want to work evenings anymore. I don’t want to work weekends anymore. Think about what you do want is going to serve as motivation for you. It’s going to give you clarity and it’s going to make sure that you are investing your time in the way that you should to get the results that you want.
