Hey Pat Rigsby here and in this episode, I want to talk with you about hitting the reset button. Plenty of us need to reset, get refocused, and move forward in a positive and progressive way. And this episode is going to help you do just that.
Welcome to The Fitness Business School podcast – the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen til the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
So this past weekend, I had the opportunity to coach my son’s baseball team, and we were playing in a tournament where we were playing against older teams. We have a good team that wins most of its games and, you know, compete at a high level, very good players. And you know, we, we were playing against these older boys and one, our first three games made it to the championship. And then you know, it got behind and things weren’t going well. And you could just see the, the wheels kind of fall off, right? People with slouched, shoulders, people kind of staring at their shoes not handling adversity well, right? People not responding to a poor performance in a way that was going to allow them to potentially turn it around.
Now, look, these kids are 11 years old, except that, you know, currently, you know, my son is the one remaining ten-year-old on this team soon to be 11. And you know, that that’s normal, right? Like hopefully that’s what sports helps to teach them how to navigate adversity, how to, to rebound. But what I noticed with adults having coached business owners for well over 15 years now is we’re not much better at this sort of thing. Right? We, we get caught up and let poor performance get the best of us too, right? Like if we sit down with two or three prospects in a row that don’t enroll in our program, then all of a sudden we’re, we’re questioning ourselves. We’re a bad salesperson, rather than those two opportunities just didn’t go the way we wanted. You know, if we send out an offer to our email list or we run an ad or post something on social media and it doesn’t go well, then we’re questioning ourself as a whole, like we’re not cut out for business or that sort of thing. So that’s one of the two things that I think that, that people struggle with and need a reset.
And then the other is just overwhelm. I probably hear from, you know, a handful of business owners each and every week saying, well, I’m overwhelmed. And really being overwhelmed is largely about being unable to, or maybe better put unwilling to make decisions, to take action because being overwhelmed kind of implies that I’ve got too many choices available. I’ve got too many things that I could do. And I am unwilling to decide that, you know, what thing that I should do. So when it comes to needing a quote unquote reset, it’s usually one of those two things leading to it. And ironically, it’s the same stuff with our clients. It’s the same stuff. They you know, they, they struggle with right. Maybe they’ve not performed well when it comes to adopting or maintaining healthy habits, healthy behaviors, maybe there there’s so much on their plate that they can’t figure out how they’re going to move forward on the things that they want to do. So they’re overwhelmed, but you know, I think at all times we, well, it, at any given time, some of us need a reset and eventually all of us need a reset. We all need to be able to just step back and say, you know what, I’m going to recalibrate. I’m going to regroup. And turn this around now in the sports world.
A lot of times that’s just, you know, stepping back, taking a deep breath, kind of visualizing what you want to accomplishing going and, and simplifying well in the business world. It’s not dramatically different than that. It probably is a little bit more evolved because, you know, you’re, you’re not just trying to move on to the next pitch or the next at bat or the next play. You’re actually having to go to work and operate at high level the next day. But the premise is the same. We need to first kind of decompress over the things that are, are not going well for us. We need to do what I’ve kind of traditionally known as a brain dump. My wife calls a mind spill. It’s more or less just get the stuff that’s in your head out of your head. You can use pen and paper. That’s the most effective approach. I know, but you can certainly open up a document on your computer and just kind of type out all the things that are weighing you down, all the things that are burdening you, things that you’re worried about, ideas, that you have choices that you have to make, get it all out there, but then we need to plan our tomorrow. And this is one that I think is critical. Like the beauty of kind of how I learned this concept of resetting coming from sports is you, you never want to let the previous play or the previous pitch negatively effect the next player, the next pitch.
So you have to take a, a deep breath and regroup and move forward. Well, the beauty of planning your tomorrow is it gives you that same opportunity, right? Your setting yourself up to succeed tomorrow, you’re taking control of your time tomorrow. You’re you’re saying, okay, what am I already obligated to do tomorrow? So you allocate the appropriate containers of time to those things. And then you identify one, two at most three things that you would like to accomplish to move forward that will allow you to not only be successful, but when you accomplish them to feel successful, to feel like you won the day. So we plan our tomorrow. Now we go into the next day with a proactive game plan. Because one thing that you you’ll recognize, anybody who is in need of a reset is almost always being reactive. They’re always just reacting to whatever circumstances they were dealt. They’re not taking control of what’s going on. They’re not taking time to actually respond. They’re just kind of reacting emotionally in the moment. Well, if you take time to have a strategic kind of reaction or more appropriately a response to something, and if you plan so you can actually shift and be proactive in what you’re doing, you’re going to be so, so much better off. So we plan our tomorrow.
Now, how do we plan our tomorrow? Well, you know, first and foremost, we need a win, right? We need to set ourselves up to succeed. We want to set our clients up to succeed. So what we do for our clients, well, we would give them things we believe they can be successful doing. If somebody can’t follow a nutrition plan, you’re probably going to be better off giving them one habit at a time to adopt, right, giving them one thing to do, not trying to give them 10 things to fix or improve at once. Well, we need to treat ourselves the same way. Fewer things are better. So let’s do fewer things actually better. And the, the great thing about this is you already know what you’re good at. You already know what you are potentially going to be most successful doing because you have experienced and actually evidence of things that have worked before. So if you’re going to ask yourself to do things, to move your business forward in this tomorrow, that you’re planning pick things that you have a high probability of being successful doing. It could be sending out an offer that has worked in the past. It could be asking for a referral from a person that you believe will refer to you because they’ve either referred in the past, or you have a wonderful relationship with them. It could be you know, asking for a renewal or an upgrade of some, you know, of a client that, that, that his had a, a great result being part of your business, but do things that you know that you can do.
I can tell you that when I’m stuck writing, when I have writer’s block, while I’ve written a daily email every day for over 15 years now, well, the simplest thing for me to do, if I want to get unstuck writing is just write a daily email. Just write, start with an email before I’m going to go write some sales copy or put together some, some other more challenging piece of material, like a book or whatever. I start with something that’s simple for me, something that I know that I can get done quickly and easily. That gives me some confidence in some momentum, because momentum comes from action. Not the other way around. If you’re waiting around for that bolt of lightning type of momentum to strike, it’s not coming, but if you take action, if you get started and you do something that you’re good at, then clearly you’re going to be able to create some momentum because you’re getting those small wins. And in fact, if you’ve ever been through kind of an old school, traditional sales training, they talk about quote unquote yes questions, getting the, the prospect or the prospective buyer to say yes, ask them questions that they’re going to give you a positive or formative response towards. Well, they’ll tell you, well, that’s moving somebody towards buying because they’re just saying yes all the time. But the truth is a big piece of it is giving you more confidence in asking for the sale, giving you more confidence as a sales person.
So you’re not asking in a kind of a, a timid or passive or even nervous way. So the same holds true here. So if you play to your strengths, you get your own kind of proverbial yeses. You’re going to be more successful. So if you want to hit reset it, it’s, it’s the coolest thing that we have going. You have the opportunity to hit reset each and every day. All you have to do is get your bearings and plan your tomorrow. So you wake up and you have a plan to follow. You’re being proactive. You’re doing things that you have confidence in that you believe that you can do well because you have evidence and experience of doing well. You, you are basically doing the same thing that you would do for your clients. You’re setting yourself up to succeed, just like you would set up these other people that you care about and that you want to thrive, how you would set them up to succeed. So if you feel like you’re overwhelmed, if you’ve had an experience or maybe even a string of experiences where maybe you didn’t perform up to your expectations, it’s okay, hit reset. You’ve got a simple plan to do it, and it’s gonna work. And before you know it, you’ll be stringing up days. One, One after another.
