Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
All too often, as business owners, we fall into this trap of doing things that may not be the best use of our time. Either things that we don’t necessarily enjoy or things that don’t provide us the greatest potential ROI for our business, but for whatever reason, whether it’s just jobs that need to be done and
maybe somebody else isn’t doing them at the level that we want, or our sense that we are the best person to do them or our desire to kind of be in control.
Like, there, there are any number of reasons why people fall into that. But then, you know, they look up and they feel like, Hey, you know what? I’ve not done a good job in building the business that I want. I’m working way too many hours. It’s a trap that we often create for ourselves. So I wanted
to give you a simple way to create what I would call a time audit and basically start to pair off some of those things and spend more time doing the things that move you forward, both from a fulfillment standpoint and a financial standpoint. So the first thing I’d like you to do is get out a piece of paper or
use a document on, on your computer or whatever else, and write down three columns. Just draw three columns in the first column, want you to start just jotting down all the things that you dislike doing, and, you know, are not the best use of your time.
So, you know, in my world, that’s probably gonna be a lot of tedious kind of administrative and operational things. It, it’s going to be data entry type stuff, or formatting emails to send out through an email system. It, it’s gonna be editing things, it’s gonna be that sort of stuff. Like maybe even you know,
creating PowerPoint slides or something. Now, fill it up with, you know, as many different ideas or random things you come up with, you dislike doing it. And you know, it’s not the best use of your time. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t have any value, because clearly if you’re doing it, it probably has
some value, but not the best use. Like, if you think about the things that you do that potentially pay you 50, 75, a hundred, $200 an hour, you clearly, this is not one of those things.
In the second column write down the things that you’re okay at doing or you’re okay with doing, right? So things that you are, you’re comfortable with, but you know, they’re not the best use of your time and they probably aren’t the biggest drivers of profits in your business. I think in my case
you know, there, there are probably things that, that fall into this category like just you know, probably set up for meetings or set up for you know, sales consultations or, or prep, you know, some of the logistical prep work for things, things that I know that ultimately do have an ROI. Like, I don’t mind
scheduling a, a sales call with somebody going back and forth with them and getting some, some prep work done, but frankly, the value for me isn’t actually doing the sales call.
You know, so I think some of that sort of thing, I think that the management, the day-to-day management of like our free Facebook group, again, I don’t, I don’t mind doing it because I get to engage with people and there’s some real time interaction. I can share some content. It’s not a high friction thing, but you know, I’m okay at it. I’m not great at it by any stretch. There are people infinitely better. I mean, we’ve got somebody Jamie that manages that group now who is significantly better than I would be at it. So for category two, what are those things that you’re okay at? But you know, they’re not the best use of your time. They’re probably not driving the business forward as much as some of those high ROI things. If you’re somebody who creates your own web pages, that’s probably a good example of that, right?
Like, I mean, you know, the end result, getting the webpage out the door is gonna be valuable to you, but you know, you’re probably not super efficient at it even if you find it interesting. All right. And then the third category things that you’re good at doing, things that you know are productive use of your
time and it, and, you know, they drive the business forward. For me, that is content creation. So creating a podcast, writing an email that, that sort of thing. It is coaching, it’s connecting with new perspective clients in its strategy. Like, so those are the things that I know move the needle in the business. You
know, connecting with people at a, whether it’s speaking at a perform better or networking in the lobby to perform better. They’re things that I enjoy. They’re things that I know drive the business forward.
Those kind of relationships are, are paramount in having a successful business for me. So for you, what are those things that you know, Hey, I’m good at this. I like it, it, it moves the needle in the business. So now we’ve got these three categories. So what do we do with it? What do we do to take action? So first
category, what are the three things that you need to stop doing, delegate, delete, or systemize based on category one. So that doesn’t mean they need to be stopped within the confines of your business, but there can be a system that that automates some of it. There can be somebody else either internally or
an outside contractor that it gets handed off to, or sometimes we just figure out like, Hey, you know what? This doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for my business.
It may have value for other people, but maybe I don’t need to be doing this. Maybe this isn’t a big needle mover for the business. All right, category two, same thing. Pick three things that we need to stop doing based on category two, the things that, yeah, I’m okay at. Now, these are typically a little bit harder to let go of because they don’t, they, they don’t kind of cause you to grind your teeth. They don’t cause you a lot of stress because you are okay at doing them. So they, they may feel like, you know, just mindless work. They may feel like, you know, low stress work, but ultimately, I, if you are spending 70, 75 hours a week working and you wanna pair some stuff off, well, you know, we’ve got to let go of some of these things in category one and category two.
And again, you can delegate it to somebody else that, that already works in your business. You can hire somebody to do it in your business, or you can hire an outside contractor the same way that I might hire somebody to go run Facebook ads or Google ads or something like that. And, you know, in, in some
cases and in category two, this is probably a little less likely, but you can delete the activity altogether. All right? And now here is what, what, what I think that that excites me in my business. And this was one of the reasons why I was really excited. You know, I mean, it’s been probably eight years ago that I
started my current business. You know, I just shifted so much more on my time into doing the things in category three. So what are three things that you need to focus more time on?
So things that you’re willing to go open up your planner and block off or fill in three full containers of time each and every week that you should spend more time on in container or category three. You know, and that could be sharpening up your sales skills. It could be just doing more personal networking. It could be public speaking, if it could be doing a podcast, it could be leadership work with your team. It can be any number of things, but they’re things that, you know, that move the needle. And there are things that you enjoy doing. And, you know, I mean, what I love about this simple approach to kind of this time audit, time auditing made simple, I think, is that it gives you a very practical set of steps, right? It’s not, Hey, how do I eliminate all the things that are low ROI or all the things that kind of make me grip my teeth when I do ’em?
How do I spend all my time working on these high ROI things? No, it, it’s an incremental kind of step-by-step process to move away from doing some of the things that are kind of an anchor holding you back and move towards doing the things that can lift you up. So that’s it. Time audit made simple. A a
really, a elementary step-by-step process to spend more time on the things that move your business forward.
