Hey, Pat Rigsby here. And in this episode, I wanna talk with you about creating big wins in your
business and life. Let’s get to it.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
We spend a lot of time on the planning side of things. When we’re coaching
business owners, my, my wife, Holly does a weekly planning call with clients. We talk about six
week planning, annual planning, and, you know, if you start to kind of get under the hood of people’s
business and, and so many things that are consuming the time in their lives, there’s a lot of, uh, minutia
taking things up.
And so I think it’s wise to focus on the big wins that we want to achieve to make sure that we’re
spending a meaningful percentage of our time on those types of things, pursuing the things that would
truly make us happy. So I thought I would give you some prompts about the things that I want from
business, and maybe that’ll help, um, help you figure out what you want from your business. Because if
you know what you want, it becomes so much simpler to reverse engineer, the business that you want
to have, what you have to do to get there. And so much of the coaching that that I do with people is that
we try to figure out what that kind of professional north star looks like, and then work our way back and create a simple plan to take them from where they are, to where they want to be.
So for me, I know that I want enough income to feel financially free. Now that’s not necessarily so much money in the bank that I never have to work again. That’s not how I’m thinking of it because I’m
enjoying work. I’m not ready to retire yet. It’s more of a, can I do what I want to do today without
money being a limiting factor and still be able to save and invest enough for future security for myself
and my family. So you can figure out your own kind of financial metric, but that’s how I vet the financial side of my business. It’s that kind of balancing act between today and the future and not feeling like I have to kind of pull from one to do the other. I personally, I want to be able to work a schedule that I want to work, not something that doesn’t, you know, not where I’m not working.
I enjoy my work, but it means that I’m able to work a schedule that allows me to do my best work. I can feel like, okay, I’m proactively choosing when I’m working and the types of things I’m doing in those
containers of time and work, doesn’t just expand into every waking hour. And then I want to do work.
That’s enjoyable.
And I think as a business owner, we’ve chosen this path, we’ve chosen to serve the
people that we serve and to play the role that, that we’re playing to an extent, right? Because we
started the business. So I think we all thrive when we have a professional sense of purpose, not just
paying the bills, but you know, we need to be doing fulfilling, enjoyable work. And that doesn’t mean it
shouldn’t be hard. Sometimes the, the hard work’s the most enjoyable and most fulfilling, it leaves you
happier.
You know, you have a sense of accomplishment, not just thank goodness it’s over, right? So I
think that doing work, that’s enjoyable, knowing that you’re making a difference, knowing that you are
having an impact that’s, that’s key as well. And then, you know, working with people that, that I enjoy,
that hopefully in your case, you enjoy and seeing them thrive. It’s not just enough to work with people
that you like, because they’re not here just entirely for, for our benefit. We need to see them thrive as
well. We need to see them achieve their goals. You know, I wanna work with people. I enjoy my clients, my team, the people that I collaborate with in the industry, the industry as a whole, I wanna work in a field where I think that I’m surrounded by good people. And not only do I want to enjoy those people, but I, I really desperately want to see them win.
I want to, you know, see, see our clients build better businesses, get more clients, earn more income
and be able to turn that into a life that really is fulfilling and enjoyable for them. When, when people
talk about, you know, Hey, I’m buying a new home, or I took my family on this vacation, we couldn’t do before. Or, you know, any of the wonderful things that are happening in their lives. I, I mean, that’s
fabulous for me seeing the people on our team, you know, be able to go out and create memorable
experiences with the people they love and get excited about, you know, the serving the clients in the
same way I do again, that’s what I want this to be. So, you know, again, I wanna like the people that I
work with, the clients that I serve, all of it, but it’s important to see them succeed.
And I hope you are building a business that affords you that same thing, seeing your clients and your
team thrive too, and not just see them as a transactional means to an end. Personally, I want to create
memorable experiences and enjoy time with the people I care about. I want to own a business that
affords me the flexibility and the means to create those types of things with the people that I love,
because, you know, I mean, let’s face it. Time is life. So I want to spend time with them. And, you know, one of the things that really drove me to create what I call my ideal business now was seeing how quickly kids grew up at the time. It was like I had an 11 year old and, uh, uh, two soon to be three year old. And it was like, man, two turns into 11 in the blink of an eye.
And now one is 11 and one is 20. Both of them soon to be, you know, be a year older, 12 and 21 coming right up and it’s happened quickly. And I know that if I wouldn’t have created a situation where we could spend, uh, a meaningful amount of time together, if I would’ve put it off and say said, oh, I’m gonna do this. And then I’ll have time later. I would’ve missed out on this journey. And I would’ve probably regretted it forever. And then, you know, I wanna build a business and I wanna do good work, leveraging my unique abilities. I think all of us want to have an impact. We want to do things that are, you know, maximizing what we individually bring to the table. You know, I wanna create assets and programs that matter to the people that I serve. I don’t want to just have a program that keeps people around for the next month.
I wanna make a difference in their lives. I wanna help them really, you know, lean on me and my team to make their business better. I wanna use my strengths and experiences to lift others up. Sure. I wanna
make money, but I want to earn it. Right. Like, I don’t want it to just be handed to me. I want to deliver
value in exchange for what people pay. Again, I’m not telling you how you have to operate, but I would
say that this is a noble enough approach that it would be worth considering in your own business. And
then finally, um, you know, I wanna set and achieve meaningful and often challenging goals. I think, you know, I’d like to get better every year. I wanna accomplish meaningful things. And, you know,
sometimes that’s a, you know, a, a, a normal target, like people talk about with, you know, clients or
revenue, or sometimes it’s, you know, lives impacted there, or it may be, you know, creating something
else that, that has a reach beyond me, like writing a book or something like that.
But, you know, these are the big wins that I’m pursuing. And frankly, I, if you’re familiar with this
concept of, you know, rocks, pebbles, and sand, right? Like you’re putting it all in the, the jar. And so
many people fill up their jar with saying they fill up their jar with busy work, and there’s no room for
those big wins, those big, big objectives, the rocks. And so these are the big rocks for me, the things that I am continually pursuing, and sure, there’s a how component, how I go about it. And that continues to evolve based on, you know, the business landscape, the circumstances, everything that evolves and changes. Sure. But these are the things that I want to accomplish through my business. And those are the big rocks. And so I have to make sure I’m putting those in the jar first, before I let sand fill everything up and squeeze out the opportunity to really move towards what I want. So hopefully this is giving you some insight into what you might want out of your business, or at least prompted you to, to think about it, put it under the microscope and get clear so that you are pursuing the big wins that you want in investing your time accordingly.
