Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in this episode, I want to talk with you about addition by subtraction, how doing something less can actually yield more. So let’s get to it.

So I’ve got what I consider a pretty valuable question to ask you, are you ready? What one thing are you doing right now that you should stop doing? Just one thing that you need to start saying no, to now I can think back in my business journey and there’ve been a number of things. I mean, at one point it was, I was doing too much business travel and I was gone way too often. And not only was it disruptive to my family and it didn’t allow me to share as much quality time with them as I wanted, but it was pulling me away from being home, doing what I consider the deep work in my business. And yeah, there, there have been plenty of other things too though, right? I mean, there were times that I was building web pages, which I think anybody that knows me now would find that almost laughable. There’ve been times that I would be the person who was kind of testing and formatting the emails that I’d send out. Now, I just hand those off.
There had been plenty of instances where I was doing something that wasn’t in my wheelhouse or something that pulled me away from doing the things that I was best at. I mean, there’ve been instances where I’ve had far too many meetings and, you know, these were all things that once I said no to them, they allowed me to take a leap forward professionally. And in some cases personally, as well now for my wife, Holly, it was often building out her own web pages or doing a lot of the tech work or maybe editing her own videos whenever she stops doing some of that stuff, her business goes forward faster because let’s face it, there are certain things that are, you know, her unique ability, things that really only she can do for her business. And I think that is a big one for a lot of us. Right?
Sure. There are a lot of things that we can do, but a lot of other people can do as well. And then there are things that really only are done at a high level. So if we’re the one doing them and we have to spend more time there. So what types of things should you be doing discarding? Should you be moving off your plate for some people, maybe it’s checking social media in the morning, maybe it’s replying to emails, sales and being reactive early in the day before they’ve done their proactive work, we can move forward on whatever they consider their biggest project or their, their biggest goal for the week. Maybe it’s doing kind of data entry type stuff. Yeah. Or I’m handling a lot of administrative work. It could be any number of things. So here are a few different ideas. The, that might help you kind of pick that one, one thing that you can discard that actually, you know, subtracting from what you’re doing will add to your business success and probably your personal fulfillment. So here’s one question you could ask to, to uncover this. Is there something you’re doing now that throws you off track or almost feels like a waste of time once you’re doing it? I know for me the meetings are one of the things that always felt like they threw me off track and then business travel kind of did too, because I would lose just a rhythm of creation of of making sure that I was doing things to improve each facet of my business. They were very disruptive to me. So is there something you’re doing that throws you off track or just feels like it’s a little bit of a waste of time, and then is there something that you do that you could pay someone else $15 an hour to do? And you could replace that $15 an hour task with a higher ROI task.
Because let’s face it, you can’t build a great business if the owner is doing about $15 an hour task, your, your role should be delegating, that sort of thing. And elevating to things that you can make 50, 75, a hundred dollars an hour with as often as you can do them. And I’m guessing that in most cases, if you just took on a single additional one-on-one training client and charge them $60 or $70 an hour, and depending on what marketing that may be market your in that may be pretty conservative. You may be able to get more, but man, I mean, $60 an hour would buy you four hours of somebody else doing these things that may be in their skillset and in kind of their wheel house or zone of comfort. Okay. And then finally, is there something that you do or maybe supposed to do that you put off just because you don’t enjoy it, man, there’ve been any number of those sorts of things in my world that, that that’s been the case. Usually it involved just kind of administrative things or handling kind of collection type stuff. If somebody’s credit card expired or a payment didn’t go through. And so, you know, I handed that stuff off to people who are actually really good at it.
And you know, it helped me, it kept me in the right frame of mind. It helped me really make more progress on the things that move the needle on the business and that I was more passionate about. So let’s face it. They’re usually a number of things that we’re doing. That aren’t the things we’re meant to do those things that, you know, we’re meant to do our strengths the best use of our time. And you’re not going to be able to offload them all today. You can commit to stopping doing one thing today. One thing that you want to get off your plate and it’ll allow you to spend more time really on your unique ability on, on things that might move you forward faster. So I’ll leave you with this one question. What are you going to stop, Stop doing today?
