Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in today’s episode, I want to talk with you about a different path to progress. Let’s get started.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
So recently I’ve been thinking about a thought or an idea that I shared. You know, I do a little thought of the day on social media, and it’s kind of just a way for me to focus my attention that day, something that’s on my mind. And it really was something that was drawn from a, a quote from Zig Ziegler, I’m sure that he expressed years and years ago before his passing, and it was helping enough people get what you want and in turn you’ll get what, or help enough people get what they want, and in turn, you’ll get what you want.
And I don’t remember the exact way that, that I articulated it, but what, but I think it was more along the lines of, you know, hey, if you’re stuck, refocus and just help more people and before you know it, you’ll be unstuck in whatever else. But the whole idea was tied back to that Zig Ziegler concept, and there was a consultant that the commented on the post and he was like, well, and make sure you get paid to do it. And, and I thought, you know, that’s probably the opposite of the way that we should think about it. And I get it, maybe that person had been burned a few times or whatever else. But I think that paying it forward is one of the, the, the coolest things that we can do at any point that, that we have the opportunity because it expresses gratitude, it plants seeds of other people going out and, and doing big things.
But I also think that you know, it also is kind of an a roundabout way to business growth. I think that if you go out and share the things that you’ve learned and accumulated over time, then you in turn are going to see business growth because of it. Now, you may think, well, wait a minute. If I’m giving this stuff away, how will my business grow? But if I look at, you know, some of the, the coaches in our industry that, that I admire guys like, you know, Eric Cressey or Mike Boyle, or Mike Robertson, or Bill Hartman, or, you know, any number of other people, they’re always sharing ideas out there on social media, in newsletters. They they, they put good information out to the world. They don’t hoard it. They don’t put everything behind a paywall. They’re putting good things out that other people can access pretty easily.
And I, and I think this holds true in every corner of the world, some of the smartest people, some of the most accomplished people, man, they’ve got wonderful podcasts. They’ve got YouTube channels, they’ve got newsletters that they send out where they’re just sharing good ideas. And, you know, I think that can grow their business because I don’t know about you, but for me, when I hear something that really rings true with me when I read something, watch something, listen to something that I’m like, man, I really enjoy learning from this person. I really enjoy their perspective. Then I do a deep dive and I start to go buy that person’s paid material, the books, the courses, the, you know, the seminars, the masterminds, and it, it’s like this wonderful win-win because those people are you know,
helping. They’re, they’re paying it forward.
They’re not just hoarding their accrued knowledge, but they’re putting it out there for other people to, to use as a springboard to, to being better. But it also obviously comes back to them now even on a more individualized level. You know, I mean, I see some people when I’ve gone to seminars and
conferences that make themselves very inaccessible, but then I see all the, you know, all these other people that I like and admire, that they’ll spend time with, with people and, and help them, and they’ll do things that, that, you know, may seem like, man, that’s over and above the call of duty. But I look back to, you know, my time early on as a very young college baseball coach, at one point I was the youngest college baseball coach in the country, and there were any number of very accomplished college coaches at the highest level of the sport.
There were people around that, you know, know in professional baseball you know, high level strength and conditioning people that if I called, they would answer my questions. They would humor my naive perspective and answer the questions I had. They would share their experiences, they would share their
insight. And, you know, so many of them gave and, and never asked me for, you know, some sort of compensation. It wasn’t like, well, here, here was what I needed in return for that. And, and obviously they had a job to do and they needed to make their living and they were going to do those sorts of things. Like, so in, in some cases that meant, Hey, I’m gonna go be a, a worker at somebody’s camp, or something like that. But, you know, I’d go work a camp at the University of Miami and the head coach there would meet with me every morning and share some insight over coffee before the camp.
And so he’s running the camp that makes him money, but he’s also taking the time to help a young aspiring coach. And I think that, you know, if we want to if we want to move ourselves forward, investing in other people, caring about other people’s success, making the things that we know, the things that can be useful to other people maybe a little bit more available, paying it forward a little bit you know, you may feel like, well, wait a minute, that’s not the direct path to where I want to go. I’m not charging somebody for this thing. I’m not you know, there, there’s not a sale. There’s not this quantifiable way that this helps. But I think of it as, you know, you’re, you’re collecting relationships, you’re planting seeds, and before you know it, you’ve got this strong network of, of people that are
outdoing, you know, out doing better. And you’ve played a part in that. And I have a hard time believing that there aren’t gonna be some pretty good things that, that come back your way as a result. So if you want a roundabout way to making progress, pay it forward.
