Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in today’s episode I want to talk with you about a big shift to have the business you want. Let’s get to it.
Welcome to the Fitness Business School podcast, the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
As I’m recording this we’ve had our Boardroom and our Ideal Business Academy mastermind meetings just in the past like three weeks. And it’s always so awesome to spend time with all these business owners. I will be the first to tell you that I have had such good fortune in trying to assemble both a team and a group of clients that I just genuinely enjoy being around.
So it’s always wonderful to get to spend time with them in person. I’m, I’m grateful or appreciative of how technology allows us to spend time with people around the globe and make it more convenient and see people with more regularity over zoom and that sort of thing. But nothing beats
being in same room with the right people. So when we do that there’s always some people who are seeing great growth. We had Aaron
Hines talk about when he started working with us, he was making about $4,000 a month, and now his business is doing like 23,000. We’ve seen people grow
from $10,000 a month to 50 plus. I mean, we’ve seen it all across the board where people have just made these incredible types of progress.
And it’s not always top line revenue, right? Like some people have gone from paying themselves next to nothing, to paying themselves six figures. We’ve seen people go from never having a day off to taking three or four vacations in a year. And so it’s always this wonderful time to see
that kind of progress. But then it, at, at the same point, invariably there are people who are there who are stuck and they are stuck at a place in their business that I is usually kind of unfulfilling and not motivating them at the moment. And we obviously always want to provide them with
strategies and tactics to, to break free from that. But one truth that I have learned throughout the years is that you, if you want to have a business that moves to the next level and then the next level, you have to become an owner that deserves that type of business and is capable of owning and
operating that type of business.
You have to think differently. You have to operate differently. And sometimes it’s what like sometimes you have to learn new things because owning a business, doing $5,000 a month, that is relatively simple to manage the, the number of clients, the facility, the fact that maybe you don’t have
much in the way of staff is very different than owning a business that is doing $50,000 a month and has a lot more moving parts. So sometimes you have to know new things to move forward. Sometimes it’s the people you surround yourself with. I am very grateful for the town I grew up in, but there
was a mindset when I was, was younger where most people, Hey, I just wanna get a stable job. I want to have a steady paycheck that offers benefits and a pension and that I can retire from.
And that was kind of the mindset at the time. And the world has certainly changed and that market has changed since then. So I don’t, I don’t know enough to how people would operate there now, but that kind of peer group wouldn’t probably have lent itself to thinking in terms of, Hey, I want to grow my business by 5X. Sometimes you’ve gotta surround yourself with a peer group that, that thinks bigger, that does bigger things that sometimes it’s being around
other entrepreneurial people instead of a bunch of employees that may not always understand or be able to empathize with some of the things you’re experiencing. Sometimes the truth of the matter is it your work ethic has to, to level up to become the type of owner who earns and deserves and
is ready for that type of business.
Sometimes you’re gonna have to push harder than you push. And I’m the guy that talks about having your ideal business. Well, guess what? You don’t just get to arrive there. You have to earn it. You don’t have your ideal business while you’re building your ideal business. And so sometimes
you gotta be willing to kind of pin your ears back and go faster and work harder. And sometimes it’s just an identity thing. It’s a mindset like, I don’t deserve this. I don’t deserve better things. And people just are worried about what the perception of others might be and whatever else. And to be fair, most of the time it’s probably a combination of some of those or even all of those. But, but if you’re going to move to the next level, you’ve got to probably evolve
and be something of a different person.
And I’m not saying you have to like re-engineer your personality or anything like that, that’s not the point. It’s that you have to believe that you are fully capable of doing what it is that you want to do, and you’ve got to set yourself up to succeed just like you’d set somebody else up to succeed. I see this very
much the same way that you would see a training client. Like if a training client comes to you and they’re 50 pounds overweight, and all the people that they’re around are overweight and they don’t know how to lose weight, they don’t understand nutrition, they don’t understand exercise, they, you
know, if all the factors in their life point to them being 50 pounds overweight, they’re probably going to have to change a few variables to get to a point that they have lost that 50 pounds, right?
They’re gonna have to probably change their peer group a little bit. Not to say that they have to disassociate with the original peer group completely, but spending more time around people who prioritize health and fitness makes that more of the norm, right? Learning what to do or being, you
know, having a blueprint, being told what to do by somebody who does know and has a, a proven path to get to where they want to go, that it’s gonna matter. Them being willing to do what it takes with that kind of consistency with the exercise or making decisions nutritionally. And then ultimately seeing themselves as somebody who does exercise, seeing themselves as somebody who does eat healthy, that becomes their way of operating. And I think that intuitively most
of the people in our industry probably get that, whether they agree with what I just said wholeheartedly.
Maybe they may even be firmer in their thinking about it or something like that. Well, guess what? It’s true about being a business owner too. It’s too true about building the business that you want to build. And if you want to make twice what you’re making or work less than you’re working and still earn the
same or more, if you want to do better, then you’re going to have to change the way that you operate. And even if you do deploy some fancy marketing tactic that allows for some growth, your progress is gonna be short relived, and you’re gonna regress back to where you were. I saw so many people that saw a temporary influx of business from Groupon or from running the lose 20 and six challenge or whatever else, and they’d see this spike, but then you’d look up 18 months later and they’d be back to where they were, or even worse because they may have kind of gotten away from the good things that they were doing and put all those eggs, put all their eggs in those baskets, and, and it kind of undermined some of the other things they did have in place.
So if you want to have better, you have to become better. I know that’s very cliche and and that’s okay. Like, I mean, I’ve said it many times over. Most cliches are rooted in a lot of truth. So yeah, be be okay with working on you. Lean into doing some things with you. Don’t just chase tactics or campaigns or
advertising or funnels or anything like that. Chase improving, personally. Chase leveling up. Do those things and you’re gonna see your business grow, but also grow in a way that is sustainable because it’s gonna have a much more solid foundation. It’s gonna have a foundation in you.
