Hey, Pat Rigsby here. And today I wanna talk with you about the four things that have to be in place
for you to create your ideal business.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
I think that business and life can be distilled down to these four things that I want to talk with you guys about today and creating your ideal business and hopefully is, you know, it is a parallel to that your ideal life, it centers around these four. So what are they? The first one is what you do now. Obviously we’ll get into all of these and a little bit, but you know, that’s kind of a common sense when the second is how you do it.
The third is who you do it with and the fourth is where you do it. So let’s discuss them and kind of break this down. And I think you’ll understand where I’m going with this concept and these four ideas, the first being, what you do. So professionally, you know, I remember growing up and, you know, I lived in a small town, Portsmouth, Ohio, and so many people, the, the idea was, Hey, just try to latch onto a solid stable job. That’ll give you some longevity and security, the, uh, you know, the type of job that has solid benefits that you could retire from, with a pension or something. Uh, you know, something along those lines, there was a maximum security prison. There’s a uranium enrichment plant there, you know, local hospital laborers, union being a school teacher, they were all fine and stable jobs.
You know, during my childhood that a lot of people built very solid professional lives with.
And most of the people that, that I knew that got those jobs, they were excited because it did provide
some security and stability. Um, and the, the thing was they were excited about the benefits those jobs
provided, but they weren’t all that excited about the jobs themselves. It was just a means to an end, so
they could retire. And I know when I was initially trying to figure out my career path, I explored those
type of jobs because that’s what I knew, the ones where you kind of punch the clock and in order to
earn a decent living and provide yourself with insurance and, you know, a 401k or something, those
sorts. And I thought, you know, you know, eventually I kind of arrived at this, this mentality that I was
like, man, if I’m gonna spend 40 or 50 or even more hours a week for the next 40 years, I should
probably do something that I’m actually going to enjoy since that’s so, so much time.
I mean, if we’re talking about 40 years and 40 hours a week for 50 weeks a year, that’s like
80,000 hours, or maybe like 10ish thousand eight hour days. I just couldn’t see myself doing
something that I wasn’t excited about for 10,000 days. So, um, you know, I fortunately got the
opportunity to be a college baseball coach where I was certainly excited and passionate about that as
the first leg of my professional life. And I got to be a strength coach there and got a bunch of neat
opportunities. And when I stopped that role, I, I had some opportunities to get into, um, sales positions
in a variety of fields where it would’ve paid me, you know, two, maybe three times as much as I had
made coaching, but they didn’t excite me for the same reason. Um, they didn’t make me feel like, Hey, I
can imagine 30 years down the road looking back and saying, man, I’m so glad I did that.
I loved what I did now.
Everybody kind of is able to carve their own paths. And that’s part of why you’re listening to this podcast because you want to carve your own path. You want to be a business owner and there’s nothing wrong with those types of jobs. In fact, um, you know, if it makes somebody happy, then it’s wonderful for them, but it wasn’t for me, coaching people, connecting, creating, having, um, a, a meaningful level of control over what I’m doing. And some autonomy, those were things that were important to me. Now you gotta choose what’s important to you, but those were the things that I was excited about. And, you know, I wanted to find a career that allowed me to do what I wanted to do. Personally, being able to coach my kids has been important to me, um, being present before and after school, that sort of thing’s big for me.
So finding a career that would allow me to do that again, that’s been, you know, kind of helping to guide my decision making. Um, in in fact, I think for us to have a happy, fulfilling life personally and
professionally, we need to spend our time doing the things we enjoy. And, you know, I, if you’re listening to this and you’re an established business owner, you’re starting up a business, you know, incremental steps towards having a professional life. You enjoy it. You know, it, it, it may not be an overnight thing, but being able to shave two hours a week from your work scheduled, spend time with your family, man, that’s, you know, do that for 10 years. And you’ve got a thousand extra hours making memories, building relationships a thousand hours. I mean, that’s a bunch, right? So when you’re talking about what you’re spending time doing, put it all under the microscope, improve it, where you can do things that are fulfilling to you and, you know, and start small and move towards where you want to go.
And, and over time it pays off big. So that’s the first one. The second one is how you do it, right? How do you go about your business? Now I view this in a couple different ways, the process, the process itself of doing are you enjoying it? Is it effective? Is it allowing you to play your best role? We spend so much of our time on this journey. You know, people get excited about the destination, but we spend so much of the time on the journey, doing the things to arrive at the outcome we want, we need to enjoy it, but I, but I also think about how you do it. It, it speaks to this, you know, how you pursue your ideal business in your ideal life, as it relates to others. I know a lot of people who leave a bunch of scorched earth behind them, when they pursue their own goals, they don’t pay attention to how their actions impact others, or they may not even care.
In fact, I’ve been around a few people who take great joy in creating misery for others as they try to
create their own success. So, as we think about how we do things, this is the way that I try to approach
it, do things as simply as I can do the thing, do things in a way that allow me to play my best role and
allow others to play theirs, do things the right way and do things in a way that lift others up, not beat
them down. All right. So that’s number two third, who you do things with, man, this is a big one.
Surround yourself with good people that you enjoy being around. And time seems to fly by with you
smiling. Most of the hours during the journey, spend time around the wrong people and time just drags.
And you’re watching the clock constantly.
So my litmus test for this is pretty simple. How do I feel when I see someone else’s name pop on, pop up on my phone, do I have an uneasy feeling or does it elicit a small smile, right? Whether it’s, who’s part of our coaching groups like clients, um, friends that I may vacation with, uh, people that I work with, I can spend, I, you know, I consider spending time with someone, the most valuable thing I have to offer. It’s the only non-renewable resource I have. So frankly, I’m pretty picky if we’re gonna be in a room together multiple times a year, like me and a client or me and somebody who coaches on my team, you know, if somebody’s coming to my house for a private consulting day, it means I want to spend time with that person. Hopefully you are crafting your business and your way of operating the same way, because life is too short to spend a bunch of time with people we don’t enjoy.
And then finally, the fourth of these kind of components is where you do things. We live in a time where you can work from about anywhere you want with, you know, in, in some instances, not, not every business offers that type of flexibility, but there are plenty of opportunities to create that flexibility if that’s a priority for you. So I, I mean, you can serve people virtually you can serve them in person, it’s up to you. You can live in your hometown. You can live halfway around the world. You can, you know, spend a lot of time on the road, vacationing and work on the go. You can carve out, uh, you know, a facility that, that is this wonderful place that you’re excited to walk through the door of every day. You know, you can choose to travel or not. Now for me, I love taking a variety of vacations with my family and doing a little bit of work where we go, I enjoy, um, you know, that flexibility, right?
I mean, it’s not freedom because I still have obligations, but there’s flexibility as to how, and when I do
certain things, and what’s funny is I didn’t grow up taking a bunch of vacations. I didn’t grow up flying
places or us taking an annual beach vacation or something like that. So it’s something I’m excited about
doing now. And, um, you know, and, and now I work from home. I’ve had an office before, frankly, I like working from home. I like being able to walk out the door and spend those extra minutes with people that I care about. I like not having a bunch of time commuting and dealing with traffic or whatever else.
And then us being able to step away from home and office and, you know, take time away to create
different memories. I, I enjoy that, but see, that’s me, you, you need to do you, you need to choose what
you prefer and pursue it, but that’s kind of the premise of this entire episode is creating your ideal
business, your ideal life. And I think that if you put things under the microscope and vet it through those four kind of components, that what you do, how you do it, who you do it with and where you do it, there are so many things that you and I can begin to incrementally, you know, to, to optimize and move towards a, a happier, more fulfilling and more impactful journey. So if you feel stuck, if you feel like, Hey, I’m getting burned at, or I don’t love the, the situation I’m in, or frankly, I just want something
to be better.
These are the four kind of things that I filter stuff through. These are the, the four kind of steps that I
take, what I’m doing through a couple times a year. I just put it under the microscope and say, okay, am
I happy in these four areas? And if I am, then you know what continue on, or is one of those four areas,
not where I want it to be. Then that tells me what to fix. So four, four actionable kind of ideas. That’ll
help you create your ideal business.
