Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in today’s episode, I want to talk with you about the type of tug of war you need to build a great business. Let’s get started.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their end impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
One of the things I’ve noticed working with some of the highest performing business people in our industry is, is that they have a, you know, a skill that they’ve
developed and notice, I didn’t say some inherent talent or anything else, but a skill they’ve developed of somehow being able to toggle between this, you know, vision or long-term goal that drives them forward and motivates them and still focus on the daily tasks that move the needle and move them
closer to that destination.
And I just don’t think a lot of people do that. If I talk to business owners and I’ve recently done a lot of investigation with our own clients and with people kind of just getting started with us, and there are a lot of people that will tell you that they are highly motivated. On a scale of one to 10, it’s always, you know, I mean, the vast majority of people say nine or 10 highly motivated, but why don’t they maybe move the needle as much as they, they should with that level of motivation? Well, I think a lot of it is not being able to toggle between those two things. There’s that tug of war and being pulled too far
in one direction, right? It’s getting so far pulled towards the things that I am responsible to do today to just sustain where I’m at.
So let me give you an idea of what that looks like, right? Like, so to sustain where you are today, you probably have to fulfill some sessions to clients. You probably have to do some administrative work to make sure that your business operates in the way that it needs to, you know, people are build
schedules are made, you know, all the stuff that just keeps everything just going as it is. You probably have to do some behind the scenes work that a lot of people don’t notice. Like, you know, making sure the facility’s clean if you have a facility, making sure that you know, programs are updated, making sure
that, you know, things get fixed if, if things, you know, are broken or whatever else. And those are just, again, to sustain what you have, you know, and that’s, that’s fine.
But then we, we combine that with doing the same stuff personally. Like, oh, I’ve gotta go to the grocery store. I’ve got to fix the food that we’re gonna eat on a daily basis. It’s not like, oh, I’ve gotta go prep meals or whatever else. Like, no, I mean, if you’ve got kids or whatever else, they need dinner and you know, maybe you’re helping somebody with homework. Maybe you’re shuttling people to, and from youth soccer, you’ve got all these obligations that you have to do to just maintain the current state of being where you currently operate. So there’s that in. A lot of people just get stuck there because then they become very reactive and, you know, somebody can pull them in and add to that plate. And, you know, I think that most people in our industry are good hearted people by
nature.
And so, you know, if a client has a concern or needs some help or whatever else, they’re gonna do it. And and a lot of people maybe aren’t in the strongest financial position as of yet, and so they kind of operate out of a little bit more of a mode of desperation. So they end up being maybe more on, on-call
to change schedules or to amend things for people than, than they would otherwise. And so there, there’s a lot of that that’s happening, and so people are operating from, from that kind of state of just sustaining. But then the other side of it is sometimes people let the pendulum swing really far the other
direction. And, you know, they’ve got a, you know, a $7,000 a month business and they’re sitting here focused on these hey, earn six figures a month with this magic system, and they get, you know, kind of starry-eyed and think there’s some magic bullet that’s going to take them from seven to a hundred in
three months, and it just doesn’t happen, right?
So the, or you know, they’ve got these grandiose go goals and they think about, oh, what am I gonna do when I have a franchise or I own 10 locations, or I, you know, I’m, I’m a subcontractor in this facility now, but I’m thinking about what it’s gonna be like when I have this 25,000 square foot facility. And so they,
they lose the, the daily actions they get so caught up in that, that kind of really grandiose vision. They lose the daily actions necessary to move from where they are to where they want to be. So the successful people, they, they understand how to reverse engineer that plan and apply themselves and
then apply, you know, if they’re leaning on somebody’s help, whether it be a business coach or buying some products or reading or whatever, they, they learn how to apply the tactics and the insight or advice or coaching to move incrementally towards where they want to go.
And when I say incrementally, I don’t necessarily mean it has to be these tiny little baby steps. Sometimes man, they’re, you know, you’re, you’re gaining a lot of ground in any one change or improvement, and sometimes they are a little steps. But, you know, I think that that’s what I see
consistently out of the most successful people is they’re doing things that move the needle on a daily basis instead of saying, well, wait a minute, I didn’t get to it because, man, if I look at the people who seem stuck, it, it doesn’t take long to figure out why I, I mean, there may be one out of 50 that, that
come to me, and I put what they’re doing under the microscope, and it’s hard for me to understand why they’re struggling for the other 49. It’s usually pretty straightforward. It’s usually pretty simple.
They’re daily a actions don’t align with their vision for where they want to be. They don’t have a lot of clarity. They’re not implementing the things that are available to them. I mean, I can look at, you know, our, our high performing coaching clients, and man, they are relentless action takers
and implementers. And when I say that, that doesn’t mean that they’re like grading out at a hundred percent. I don’t think many of us do. In fact, I don’t know anybody who does. But but they’re probably to use you know, to borrow nutrition coaching language. Like they’re 80% compliant probably, right? Like they’re doing things most of the time. And then I look at the people who are struggling and it’s like, well, I know I should do this, but, or This is what I’m going to do, or this is what I would like to do.
There’s a lot of shoulds and coulds, but not a lot of doing. And then we, you know, I mean the key for us is to figure out, okay, let’s craft a plan. Let’s give you the tools for the plan. Let’s give you the coaching to execute on those tools and on those systems so you can successfully, you know, work
the plan. And if we do that, then success is relatively inevitable. I mean, when I say relatively, you know, any life can happen, changes of circumstances can happen, but for most people, success is inevitable. It’s just, I mean, you’re in a collision course with your goals if you’re willing to work the plan, but
you gotta have a plan. You’ve got to be able to have the tools and support necessary to execute the plan at a pace that keeps you motivated and gives you results.
So it starts to compound because if you don’t have that pace, you get discouraged, you get frustrated, you feel stagnant, and you lose motivation. So that’s, I mean, that’s the tug of war. That’s the the thing that I think we’ve, you’ve gotta find that, that medium point where it’s, I’ve got enough stuff out in front
of me that inspires me, but it doesn’t distract me from the things I need to do today to make progress consistently do that. And man, like I said, success is inevitable. Now, if I can help you with the plan, if I can help you with the tools, if I can help you with the coaching, that’s what I do. So I am more than
happy to connect with it. Just shoot me an [email protected] and we’ll see how we can help you achieve your goals.
