Hey, Pat Rigsby here and today I’ve got rule number five of building your ideal business. Let’s get to it.
Welcome to the fitness business school podcast. The show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen till the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
So rule number five for creating your ideal business is playing your best role. Now as a startup business owner, odds are you’re playing every role. I know I’ve been there. I’ve been everything from, you know, in the, in the beginning of building business, the service provider, the program designer, the salesperson, the marketer, the administrative assistant, the website designer, the janitor, right? You name, it might even be the equipment repair person. You’re gonna fill a lot of roles in that early stage of business. And that’s fine, right? So many business owners, they fall in this trap of still behaving like a startup five, 10 years down the road, and that’s not playing your best role. Heck I, I watched my dad and his business kind of wear every hat in the business. Gosh, he still owns the business. Now it’s really scaled back at this point. But man, it’s like 35 years in and he wears almost every hat, but I won’t tell you that that’s ideal. That’s not playing your best role.
Your best role is the role where you can have the most impact where you can be the most fulfilled by the work you’re doing and where you can earn the most income per hour for the value you’re delivering our objective. When we talk about playing our best role is to move from that position where you feel like you’re almost held hostage by your business, into a spot where you’re doing your most impactful, your best, your most fulfilling work. We must move away from a role where we’re having to do everything. And we’re on call. There has to be a shift from always feeling overwhelmed by the number of things you’ve got on your plate in any given day to a role where you’re spending at least 80% of the time that that you’re working, doing the things you are meant to do the things you’re best at notice. I didn’t say a hundred percent of the time. It’s a business. There are things that are gonna pop up. This isn’t perfection. This is progress. So we are trying to spend at least 80% of our time doing the things that we can apply are unique skills and talents to. So in some cases, the things in our business that maybe only we can do.
Now, I can tell you in my business, my best role is writing my, my daily emails doing coaching calls or zooms or hosting meetings or events for clients connecting with new clients, being the strategist, you know, creating a podcast podcast like this, connecting, coaching and creating are the things that I am truly fulfilled by. And the, the thing is if I’m the one testing and formatting, the emails being sent out or doing the web design, or if I’m the one handling how we’re gonna book a hotel room for masterminds, I’m not playing my best role. Those tasks can be better filled by somebody else. So I can have my maximum level of impact. And I, if I’m doing those, I’m not having that level of impact. I’m not doing the things that I can generate the most revenue for the business through. I’m not doing the things where I can serve clients the best. I’m not doing the things that energize me the most.
And you know, I mean, I can remember my wife, Holly, going through this whole process herself. And there are certain things that she just kinda want to hang onto, right? But she worked with moms for over a decade, but like, and still does to this day. But when her business, when it was very, you know, it was a, a bigger business and there were a lot of moving parts in the early stages. She didn’t wanna let anything go, right? She didn’t wanna let, let anybody else touch web design, copywriting, email design, customer service, product creation, videography, anything else? It was all her baby, right? She you know, bit, eventually her hand was kind of forced, right? We were going on vacation to Bahamas. She wasn’t gonna have the opportunity to be tethered to a computer or have good internet. And so she couldn’t do all the customer service stuff. So she handed it off to a, a friend who had been a loyal customer and was really involved. And that lady did a wonderful job. And Holly was able to recognize that she could hand off certain things. And over time, you know, she, you know, she, she had a videographer help her out, who who’s actually helping me right now, as we record this podcast, Paul produces all the podcast as you well know because of our previous episode together. And she could spend more time playing her best role on camera coaching, helping the people she served move forward in only a way that she could.
So maybe some of that kinda rings true for you, right? Maybe you’ve kind of been unwilling to let go because, Hey, I’m the only person that can do this. But the reality is, you know what? Yeah, you may be the best person to do certain things, but if you’re doing a lot of things that other people could do, 90% as good as you, how much less time are you spending doing the things that you can have the greatest impact on that you could make the greatest difference in your client’s lives on that you could build your business most effectively doing. So think about that, where you’re gonna get the best return for your time, your effort, your energy, and pour yourself into those things. What you’re gonna find by playing your best role is that, you know, the hours you work just fly by because you’re having a great time. You’re doing the things you love to do. Your business is gonna grow. Your income’s gonna increase because you are doing those high ROI activities. Plus you’re creating opportunities for other people to play to their strengths and do the things they’re great at. So you’re scaling and you’re having a greater impact on other people’s lives as well.
