Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in this episode, I want to share just a handful of other lessons that I’ve learned, things that I’ve been reflecting on as of late, that have really been the foundation of all my professional successes. So we’ve got a few more to cover. Let’s get to it.
Welcome to The Fitness Business School podcast – the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen til the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
So hopefully you’ve been able to check out the, the last couple of episodes, if not you know, I’d love to have you go back and listen to ’em because really I’ve tried to distill down the foundational stuff that has helped me a lot as a business owner. Right. And, and everybody falls in love with the tactical things. And oh, what kind of funnel do you use? What software do you use? And honestly, in, in so many cases that that sort of stuff is maybe not even secondary on the list, it’s the decisions, the foundation, the, the way of operating that I, that I think has helped me the most and that I’ve really tried to instill in the clients that I work with. So I I’ve got you know, maybe a handful of other things I wanted to touch on with you as I wrap up this little kind of off the cuff series, if you will. And, and the first is understand that time matters most.
And this is something that admittedly I struggled with for a long time, but probably over the past six or seven years, I I’ve gotten to be what I would consider pretty good at it. I, I spend my time with people that I enjoy and honestly, I pretty much ignore the rest. The, they become virtually invisible to me. I, my vacation is a, a good example of that, right? I, I am going to spend time on vacations with people that I love. I’m gonna enjoy myself and create memories instead of putting that off and trying to just make an extra buck here or there. And, you know, I’m fine with paying somebody else to do some tasks to buy back time, whether that be you know, mowing my lawn, which I obviously, years as a baseball coach, you spend plenty of time mowing or fixing my car. And I grew up working in a garage. So, I mean, I can remember changing Holly’s alternator in the driveway, right when we were starting our relationship together. But, you know, I, for, for me now at this stage, it’s it, it’s far more wise for me to buy back that time, to use it, doing things that I enjoy with people that I love. And then the, the next one is do the work well, right?
Being willing to the work, which, you know, we, we teach this as business owners, right? We teach this to clients, Hey, you’ve gotta put in the work. You’ve gotta be consistent. You know, it’s gonna take some commitment. We love to talk about, Hey, I want a committed client that this is gonna be a lifestyle for. And, and we say it, but we don’t necessarily always do it. And we have to accept that there aren’t really quick fixes or magic bullets out there. We, you know, we, we kind of know it intuitively, but we’re still quick to, to fall for things like, Hey, we’ll fill your gym in 30 days on, on Facebook. So sure. Yeah. You might even be able to get one of these gimmicks to, to work temporarily, but it’s a bandaid, right? It doesn’t help you build a great business. And in many cases, what I have found is it digs your whole even deeper because that’s time that you spent taking your eye off the ball. And it’s kind of the same stuff that if a client came to you with a, a fad diet where they were gonna essentially starve themselves for 30 days, sure. They’d lose weight, but does that sort of thing work out well over the long haul? So know that you have to do the work to have anything great.
And that could be from, you know, from, from having a, a great relationship to building an awesome business. And then the next thing up is knowing your, what I would call your, your kind of best or your magic time in place. And a, a lot of this is just kind of getting clear about how you best operate for me. The mornings have always been the best possible time for me, for writing. Vacations have always been the best place for, for ideas and creating, you know, creating new things or coming up with new concepts. I prefer doing coaching calls in the early afternoon. You know, my wife, Holly has her way of operating my, my long time friend and, and collaborator. And so many coach programs, Justin U has his way of operating. And neither of those are lined up exactly with mine and you probably have yours, but you need to build your processes around it rather than kind of just being reactive and letting other people take control of your schedule. And then the next one, and, and this is one I heard the phrase from somebody else and man did it, did it hit me and make the most sense of, you know, about any one liner I’ve ever heard. And the gentleman, Jesse said, if you are the pioneer distractions are the arrows.
And I love this visual of this pioneer blazing a trail, and having to dodge arrows that might slow them down or stop ’em all together. And, you know, for us, those distractions, those things that pull away from our focus, those are the arrows, the, the, the things that keep us from being present with our loved ones. You know, if you’re constantly looking at your phone instead of being present in the moment, if you are trying to write a marketing campaign, but you keep checking social media, I, I, if you are in this environment where you’re always letting other people tug at your attention, you can’t get things done. You can’t go as quickly and effectively as you want to. And then, you know, finally, the last one, man, this, this is this is kind of my way of operating in a nutshell. And it probably summarizes a lot of things for me because it’s very much ideal business simplified. And, and for me, a lot of times it’s just create happy and eliminate unhappy. So do more of the things that, that bring you fulfillment and joy in the long term and work to eliminate the things that, that drag you down. And I, if you’re not clear about what those things are review each day at the end, one of the things that I’ve had as a habit for a long time is mapping out my tomorrow, the evening prior.
So I’ll look at my my day and say, well, okay, did this go well? Did I like doing this? Did working with these people, make me happy. And if not, then I work to try to eliminate that from my schedule. Now, sometimes that means delegating. Sometimes that means creating systems. Sometimes that means outsourcing. And sometimes that means just moving it off the table completely. And don’t, don’t think for a minute that, that means it’s a now thing always, right? You may hate working Saturdays. You don’t have the ability to just immediately pull that off your plate now, but that is just like a revenue goal. That can be a professional goal. Just like adding five new clients, not working after five on Thursday or Friday might be a goal. And we can work to those things as well. Now, you know, I don’t want you to think that, Hey, you know what? Yeah, you’ve been doing this a long time. You’ve got a team that works with you. You’ve, you’ve had some, some financial success. So you can say that at stuff, you can do this. Well. I mean, I lived in a basement for the first year. We built our business, but it doesn’t mean I didn’t have a vision of where I wanted to go.
And it certainly was anything but overnight, it took a lot of years. And as long as you keep that in front of you, and you’re making small choices on a daily basis, literally day after day, you can get there and you can probably cover a lot more ground than you will ever imagine. And that’s really what these three episodes of lessons have been about. Small choices done day after day, things that add up and compound over time. Now these are the things that have helped me. You, you would be wise to adapt things and learn from them rather than just take them verbatim for how I look at them, but I know they’ve helped me. And I’m sure at least a few of them can help you too.
