Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in this episode I wanna talk with you about five things that I’ve seen make people better on a consistent basis. So let’s get to it.
Welcome to The Fitness Business School podcast – the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen til the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
Over the years, you know, I’ve always kind of been a student of people improving, whether it’s, you know, trying to pursue my own improvement as an athlete or as a college coach or as a, you know, as a business owner or even in my personal life. And, and there have really been kind of five different things that I’ve seen people do that, that have paid off time and time again. And to be honest, most of the successful people I know embrace all five. But I don’t know how somebody could be truly successful if they didn’t at least lean into two or three or four of these. So thought I might share during this episode, the first is really simple. It’s just what I consider basic right? Like you need to be a lifelong learner to be successful in about anything because things continually change. Now, there are certain things that are gonna remain the same that hopefully you keep refining getting better at, but you also need to be able to adapt and navigate your current circumstances.
Now, for me, I’ve always been a reader. You know, I kind of learned that from my mom and have always read one or two books on a weekly basis for as long as I can remember. And then, you know, I’ve really gotten into podcast over the years, kind of following up, you know, and an effect action for audio books before that some people are great at watching videos or courses, but almost everybody that I know I, that that is really successful is, you know, they’re, they’re a studier in fact I don’t know too many people that are, are successful that don’t have a steady diet of studying in their weekly plan or their weekly schedule. So that’s number one. Number two is attending live events, which seems you know, seems in, in some ways like, like it’s been, throttled a bit over the last couple of years, but I, I mean, from when I was a kid going to baseball camps to attending seminars or conferences to workshops you know, these are always really valuable. I, I know they’ve been super valuable for me because they’re so immersive, right? You’re around like-minded people. You are you know, you’re not trying to squeeze in some things between work. You, you are just really kind of surrounded by the opportunity to improve by people who are kind of in the same frame of mind by ideas. It just gets you kind of out of your comfort zone.
And in fact, I would tell you that the kind of first domino in me, even having a podcast that you’re listening to at the moment was the attendance at a Ryan Lee bootcamp back in like 2004 and just going there and recognizing that, you know, the type of business that I wanted to own, wasn’t one that was limited by geography. So that attending live has been really the, the first domino, if you will, for me in building a, a business that has served me and my family. So, so well from a financial standpoint, me from an impact standpoint and from a lifestyle standpoint as well. So you know, if you’re not attending live events and you’re in a situation where you’re comfortable attending live events, make that part of your schedule. I go and speak at a couple each year and part just because I like being around that environment, and I know how big an impact they had on me.
The third is being a part of a group with high performing peers. I’ve been in mastermind groups, gosh, all the way back to about 2006. But even before that, you know, I always did better, better with high performers, right? I I’ve been you know, in groups with people who’ve run these massive successful businesses. I’ve been in groups with people who’ve run what I would consider better, but not necessarily bigger businesses. I’ve host did some of the, or ran some of the most successful mastermind groups in, in our industry. But I saw the power of this long before I was a business owner. You know, all the kids I played sports with in our neighborhood growing on, like growing up, went on to play like a sport in college, my best friend you know, from, from childhood to now, it is a tremendous athlete. And he probably was as a diligent, a worker as anybody I’ve ever met. And so being around him certainly helped to bring out the best in me and, and improve as an athlete. And then also establish some you know, some, some work ethic type traits that hopefully have carried on into other facets of my life.
One thing I noticed when, when I was a college baseball coaches, we had a really good hitting team and people who had come into our program, they might transfer in, or they’d be freshmen and maybe their past experience, they, they just had never really thrived as a hitter. Well, if they came to our program, would invariably put up their best season ever, they would improve dramatically because they were just in a culture, an environment where it, it forced them to kind of raise the bar. Now maybe you don’t feel like you’re in a place to be in a mastermind group or, or maybe you already are in one. But I would tell you find a way be in a group of high powered peers somewhere where you can connect with other people where you can you know, where, where you can really just level up because let’s face it being a business owner makes us kind of the, the outliers.
We’re a little bit of oddballs because the, the typical person isn’t. So make sure you’re surrounding yourself with other people who lift you up, who challenge you, who share best practices and help you overcome your, your, you know, your losses and celebrate your win. And then the next one is practice. Now, you know, there are plenty of people that, that, you know, are, are quick to share, you know, these shiny object type tactics online, but the, the, the truth is the, the thing that nobody ever wants to talk about that I think is probably yielded a lot more success stories than all the internet gurus combined is just, you’ve gotta practice. If you wanna be great at anything you need to practice. And my guess is the people who you fact most in this field, or any other are ones who are continually practicing, they’re honing their craft, they’re getting better. And if you have a sports background, like, like I do, you know, the value of quality practice, my belief is that as a coach, my job was, Hey, we’ve gotta be great in practice. And if so, the games kind of take care themselves. And then the last one is, you know, you’ve got to do the work at the end of the day. You have to put what you know, into action, no theory, no, you know, no armchair quarterbacking you know, you need to really go out and implement.
You need to execute because the market is going to give you feedback. Otherwise, it’s just a hypothesis. If you want to be good at something, you have to put your skills and know to the test. If you want to be the best in your market, then you actually have to go out and do it. It’s not enough to just to say, you’re gonna do that. And guess what sometimes what you do, isn’t gonna work. And then you adapt, you course, correct. You improve. And there’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, that’s how improvement happens. Right? And, you know, I know for me, these five things ha have been really the drivers in, in, in moving forward, making progress and, and pursuing, and hopefully reaching goals. And, and I’m a hundred percent sure they, that same potential direct correlation between these for you as well. So take inventory of these five. Are you making them part of your professional development, if not, what’s missing, improve, improve that, add it in, and you’re gonna see a surge, Your progress, for sure.
