Hey, Pat Rigsby here. And we are up to episode number three in this six part series about what we’re doing to improve and grow our business and how you can apply it to yours. And today we’re going to talk about accountability or maybe a better way to put it might even be success coaching. So I’m going to explain what I mean there, and we’ve got some ground to cover, so let’s get to it.
Welcome to The Fitness Business School podcast – the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen til the end of this episode, because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
If you’ve paid any attention to the emails that I put out, the podcasts that I do, the, the presentations that I’ve done, any of that, you’ve probably heard me talk about the fact that I think accountability for a lot of people is like the missing link in their business. And frankly, it’s the, the greatest opportunity to help somebody be more successful because people have plenty of access to information. They’ve got, you know, education on whatever they want, kind of at their fingertips. They’ve got most anything they could ever need to learn available to them on YouTube or where they can buy a really inexpensive program or course, and get access to what they need, but let’s face it. People are largely creatures of habit. People have their own routines, their own set of behaviors. People are busy, they’ve got their own lives, getting them to do things differently, to adopt new habits, to, to kind of change the way that they operate is hard. And it is much, much harder without some sort of accountability that, that allows somebody to know that somebody else is not only watching, but cares about their success, cares about their progress.
Now, like accountability is something that I think that we all understand, right? Like we all understand that there’s some inherent accountability from early on in our life. We know, Hey, there’s due date for a, a paper. So I’m, I’m going to have to do this at this, or by this time, or there’s a consequence. If I’ve got a quiz on Friday, I have to study beforehand, or there’s a consequence. You know, we, we have like, that’s part of accountability. And frankly, that’s why I think in many ways offline training is going to always have an important place in our world because there is inherent accountability in the fact that you have to show up at a specific place at a specific time to do things that other people would be participating in. So not only are there coaches watching, there’s some peer accountability and you can’t just quit midstream, you can’t just kind of do it half heartedly because people are watching. And, you know, I think that’s a big piece of this puzzle, right? It’s not a, a self-directed thing there there’s that accountability three times a week for an hour where you’re probably doing more and doing better than you would have done on your own. So the, the thing that we’ve tried to do instead of being one of these programs that are out there, that kind of call themselves coaching bit in truth, or just a course with a Facebook group and every now and again, there might be some sort of live training. That’s still really just a one-way conversation.
We provide a number of layers of accountability. We have somebody deemed an accountability coach. We actually we’re just fortunate enough to have my wife take a bigger role in our business and provide more of that kind of ongoing support for clients. We do weekly check-ins with everybody. We have a scoreboard that they’re accountable for filling out there. There’s a lot of kind of layered accountability, which as a business owner structured accountability is something that we just don’t get a lot of sure. There’s accountability that we have to deliver what we’ve sold. Sure. There’s accountability that we have to pay the bills, but from a day-to-day basis when it comes to business growth, some of that accountability side of things is, is absent because your, the top of the food chain in your business. So what we want to do, I think of is onboard people the right way. So there’s some accountability to go through the steps that we think will set them up to succeed. There is that weekly structured check-in to make sure that they’re staying on track. We have outreach too, to help them stay the course and be consistent because we’re big believers in the fact that consistency is really the foundation of most sustainable success. And then when people inevitably kind of fall off track, there, there is somebody there to help kind of reroute them and get them re-calibrated and back to where they’re trying to go because let’s face every one of us falls off track. At some point, every one of us falls off track because of, you know, our circumstances.
We create circumstances that are maybe thrust upon us and our clients do too. Right? And it’s so easy for somebody you think about just normal human nature, right? The person’s doing great on their diet or their nutrition program. They, they, they have a day that they kind of get off track and they’ve, they, they have that defeatist mindset that I blew it instead of thinking of, Hey, I’m just going to start a new chain of days. One. I’m going to understand that if I win 250 days out of 365, when it comes to improving my business, I’ve made quantum leaps forward. I’ve done great things. And I’m really making big steps towards having the business that I want. You know, this isn’t about batting a thousand. It’s not about being perfect. And so we have a team in place that, that really, you know, they they’ve got touch points. They, they do things like to celebrate the wins too, to make sure people know that they’re heard and important to give them feedback when they need help. And you know, when I say we have a team, obviously that kind of starts with me.
In fact, all the, what we call our Friday, check-ins come to my inbox and I read every one of them and reply to every one of them to make sure that people know that I care about what they’re doing, that that I’m paying attention. And then, you know, we’ve got the other people that are kind of watching this in different ways to make sure that people are moving forward in the way that the, that is best for them as an individual. And remember, I, I think of this as, yes, they’re all individuals, even though this is in many ways, kind of a group coaching program, they’re all individuals with their own goals, their own model, their own strengths, their own experiences, and frankly, their own timeline. You know, one of the pet peeves that I have when it comes to any of this is somebody saying, I feel like I’m behind behind what, right? Like you, you are going at your own pace. And our job is to help you sustain the pace that you want, need to go at to get the results that you want. So if you are not making accountability, a big piece of what you do, I think you’re missing the boat. In fact, I think your turning yourself into a commodity, you’re just delivering workouts. You’re just a workout instructor in many ways. No matter how good the training is because let’s face it. People need that sort of to stay on track and to maximize their results. And frankly, they needed outside of the three hours a week that they’re in supervised training sessions.
Just as much as they needed inside those three hours a week, because when it comes to things like recovery or nutrition you know, they, they need that same sort of guidance. They need that same sort of attentiveness from a coach if they’re going to maximize the results. So, you know, there, there are a number of things that I shared there. You certainly don’t need to start with all of them. But you do need to make accountability a bigger piece of what you do. In fact, one of the things that we work on with, with the clients we serve is what we call the other one sixty five. This actually originated with my friend, longtime client and collaborator in some coaching, Doug Spurling, who has done great things with his seven figure business in a small town in Maine. And a lot of that hinges about like on what he does with accountability when clients aren’t in the gym. So if you’re not making accountability a priority, hopefully this is your first domino to put that in place.
