Hey Pat Rigsby here. And in this episode, I want to talk with you about overcoming losing behaviors. So many people think about the things that they want to do well, the things that they’re going to propel them to success. But one of the things that I have found to be true is that if you can mitigate the losing behaviors, the limiting beliefs, you’re going to be in a much better position to succeed. So let’s get To it.
Welcome to the fitness business school with Pat Rigsby, the podcast for fitness entrepreneurs who want to make more income, have greater impact, and enjoy more freedom in their ideal business. If you’d like an accelerated route to these goals, email me at [email protected] and put BGA in the subject line and I’ll get you all the details about our business growth accelerator program.
One of my favorite ideas that from studying Warren Buffet along the way is it’s not about the big wins as much as it’s just about avoiding the foolish mistakes about avoiding the, the bigger losses, if you will. And if you can avoid the things that are real pitfalls, real valleys for people, then, you know, you’re, you’re not going to have to make up as much ground. You’re not going to have to do as many big things to be successful because let’s face it. We all make mistakes. We all occasionally adopt some behaviors that are not working for us. So instead of spending all of our time about all the things that you, you know, you need to do to be successful or whatever else, I mean, sometimes maybe it’s wise to just look back and say, okay, what kind of things can I do to prevent from digging myself a hole, so to speak?
So the first one is really just accepting personal responsibility. You know, there, there, there’s a, a phrase that I’m very fond of. It may not be your problem, but now it’s your responsibility. You, I mean, you may walk into situations that you didn’t ask for. You may inherit things that you’re not excited about, but once you kind of step into the ring, it’s, it’s your responsibility. And so you know, embracing personal responsibility, trying to be proactive in saying, okay, what could I have done differently here instead of passing the buck, instead of looking for scapegoats, I think is huge. You know, we like, I, I truly believe that, you know, for the most part, and clearly there are always the, the outlier examples, but for the most part, we are where we’re supposed to be based on our actions that we’ve taken in our behaviors that we’ve embodied too this point, right? So people can talk about bad luck and rough circumstances. And I’m not saying that none of that is true because some of it, you know, people you know, are, are born with different situations. I you know, they, they they’ve fallen on some, some tough times that may not have been their doing, but for the most part you know, you can look up and say, you know what? Yeah, if I wanted a better business, I probably would have behaved differently over the last few years. If I wanted a better relationship, I probably would have acted differently over the past few years. And so taking personal responsibility saying, okay, what can I control is a big step toward avoiding these losing behaviors? Because I don’t know too much, any people that, that have failed that really embrace personal responsibility. Most all of the people that I know in life that have done well, well, it probably taken more, more than their share of personal responsibility, taking responsibility for things that may have it may have justifiably been on somebody else’s shoulders, but they’ve said, okay, what could I have done differently before I ever look at somebody else and expect them to do better?
So that’s the first, the second is this mindset of linking our behaviors to results. I hear people all the time talk about results. You know, we, we do annual goal-setting for clients every year. We, we do quarterly goal setting and goal achievement plans. And, you know, I think that people are really, really good. It, it saying, Hey, I want this thing. I want something different. I want to, to have this better outcomes, better situation. But a lot of times they don’t directly link that to the behaviors the, that they have in place. It’s no different than if somebody says I want to lose weight well, or your behaviors can grew it with them losing weight. You, you want to be wealthy. You want to have you know, wealth in the future. You want to have security and opportunity. Well, are your behaviors today such that your creating more revenue and saving or investing a meaningful percentage of that revenue?
So if your behaviors aren’t tied to your results, then those aren’t really tangible, meaningful goals. They’re just dreams their wishes. Like we’re not just going to arrive at a place where we get, well, we want without having the behaviors that align with that. So a simple way to improve this is to take an audit of your behaviors periodically and say, okay, which of these are serving me and, and which of these aren’t, you know, if you want to build a more profitable, more lucrative business, which of your behaviors are moving you in that direction, each, each and every day, each week, which things are moving in that direction and which ones aren’t, which ones are time vampires, which ones are leaving you on motivated, which ones are low ROI activities that you should eat eliminate or delegate. So do an audit and then pick one and fix it, move down the list, pick one, fix it, move to the next one, pick one, fix it.
So thinking behaviors to results would be number two and number three, and I think this has been big for me is upgrading your environment. If you’re around people who really embodied the behaviors that, that yield the results that you want, you’re going to be more likely to get there. I mean, I look back to, to my youth and I can directly attribute any success I would’ve probably had in baseball to, you know, surrounding myself with, with some people who are really, you know, really good and probably more talented than me. And and it motivated me, but then also, you know, having a best friend and who was a tremendously hard worker. And, and so being around him, I had to kind of raise the bar on, on my work ethic, on my level of commitment on, on the way that I was going about my actions on a daily basis. Not not saying, Hey, I did our team practice and that’s enough, but being willing to do more. And as I’ve moved into the entrepreneurial world surrounding myself with people who were doing better than me, people who are further along, people who had kind of climbed the mountains, that I was at the base of and learn from them. And, you know, I kinda understood how they operated. And yeah, I think that’s helped me not only evolve way, the, the, I looked at where I was investing my time, but also evolve what I thought was possible.
You know, there were plenty of times in my younger days that I thought making 30 or $40,000 a would have been not only great, but probably the ceiling. And then you know, later on when you, when you recognize that, you know, there, there, there probably isn’t a whole lot of a ceiling there if you don’t want there to be because you’re around some people who’ve done things that you probably never even thought possible. Well, upgrading your environment will allow you to to really kind of raise the bar on your expectations of yourself, on your expectations of those around you and what you’re willing to settle for. And that’s probably the, you know, one of the keys there is, you know, you’re, you’re also raising the basement and that’s how we avoid some of those losing behaviors. Like it’s not even on the radar to do some things now or behave in a way or get certain results that I would have said would have been great for me 10 years ago. So three things that I think help have helped me, I think they can help you, but it’s just a different way to look at it. Do you know, avoiding those behaviors that that really can be stumbling blocks. It can really drag us down because if you can mitigate your losses, it’s a lot easier to get to where you’re trying to.
