For my entire adult life, I’ve spent probably a disproportionate amount of time studying successful people, whether it be surrounding myself with successful people in mastermind groups or attending events, or just reading biographies of people who had achieved some degree of greatness in some field or another, and almost universally there, there are these commonalities and, you know, I think that’s the thing that most people overlook. They, they look for the differences. They look for the shiny object that makes this person different than the rest, or, you know, that person kind of road to success. When the things that interest me the most are – what do they all have in common? Because if you have that, then you’re kind of setting yourself up to succeed. And it’s a universal thing almost.
And one of the things that I think that, that I found to be true of, pretty much everybody who’s achieved some degree of success in their life is they operate by design. They don’t operate based entirely on circumstance or, you know, they’re not reactive. They’re, they’re the architect of their own kind of world. They, you know, whether it be business or, you know, whether they’re an employee, that’s done great things, or maybe they they’ve done impressive things in their personal life and their relationships, people that have been willing to kind of beat their own path instead of just expecting somebody else to draw up their blueprint.
And you see people who struggle that that’s the flip side. Most of the time, they’re trying to play by somebody else’s blueprint right there. They’re following the blueprint that their parents mapped out or their peers mapped out, or a boss or a guidance counselor professor. They think that they have to mirror else even. Yeah. If they don’t have the same skills, the same experiences, the same personality traits or strengths. And so they fall short because they didn’t build or, or craft a plan that was designed to set them up to succeed. Right. And if you will want to be successful in anything, I don’t care if it’s a personal pursuit or a professional. So you know, you’re going to need to, to craft a plan that allows you to, to succeed on your own terms.
I learned this way back when I was a college baseball coach, my first couple of years as a coach, I was the youngest coach and all of college baseball and the youngest head coach in all of college baseball. And, you know, I didn’t really have a coaching identity if you will. So I just mirrored somebody who I admired somebody who had been something of a mentor to me, but his strengths and his personality and his experiences were completely different than mine. And, you know, and it really kind of limited our success. I mean, we did okay. The first couple of years we had winning seasons, but it was clear that we had a pretty low ceiling of potential. If I continue to follow this approach. And what, you know, really was almost like an imposter doing this because it wasn’t authentic to me. Well, when I said I started to design a plan that did play to my strengths and the strengths of the circumstances that I had available to me, the strengths of the university, the strengths of the community, the strengths of the, you know, the experience I did have the things that might’ve made me unique or set me apart. That’s when we really started to see progress. That’s when we really start to get traction, we started to recruit better players because I was able to really market and recruit in a way that was more authentic. And in turn far more appealing to them, we develop players better because I was willing to, to kind of get outside the box and do things that maybe weren’t being done it at least with w in the, the, the competition that we were playing again, and, you know, really started to, to snowball. And we went from being a slightly above average team, my first couple of years, to being a nationally competitive team, really that next season. And it just kept kind of snowballing from there because, you know, I designed a better plan that I could execute to, to its fullest, I guess. And, you know, it was something I was excited to pursue and go get. And that’s something else that I think is undervalued or under appreciated.
If you’re following somebody else’s plan, if you’re really letting somebody else be the architect of your personal blueprint, you’re not going to be nearly as excited about going out and pursuing it. You’re not going to be nearly as excited about, you know, just trying to, to max it out and get everything you can from it, because it’s not yours. It’s not designed for you. It’s not built around your strengths or your passions, or, you know, your, your personality. So, you know, it’s, it’s something that I don’t think enough people appreciate it. I think that we live in a kind of just fall follow the neighbors society, right? Like whatever other people are doing, I’m just going to knock that off and, and clone it, right. It’s one size fits all. If the gym down the street prices things this way, then I have to price things that way. If somebody else is running the style ad, then I have to run that style ad. Instead of saying, you know what? There are some unique experiences and strengths and talents that I bring to the table. And these are the things I’m excited about. So I’m willing to dive in head first and go from being potentially great at this to actually being great at this. You know, it, if you think that way you, you can probably exceed anything that you may have originally dreamed up. I know that looking back to that time is a baseball coach.
You know, I remember writing out on an index card, what my goals were for the program and, you know, they, they were goals based around playing by somebody else’s kind of, of playbook. But as soon as I kind of re-engineered things and crafted up my own blueprint, we started to pursue that. We blew all of those goals out of the water and exceeded things far beyond anything I would have ever thought possible. And if I look at my professional life, it’s kind of been the same thing, you know what, in hindsight, we’re pretty conservative goals for what I wanted out of being a business owner, what I might’ve wanted as far as impact or income or lifestyle. And as soon as I kind of shifted gears and said, okay, I I’m going to play to my strengths. I’m going to build my ideal business and craft things around the way that I want to operate. Again, it, it was far better than anything I could have probably expected.
So my suggestion to you kind of step-by-step is craft your vision, think about where you actually want to go, what success would be to you personally and professionally. And then, you know, that’s probably, for me, that’s a three to five-year plan. You know, anything beyond that, things change so quickly. I think it’s hard to get a clear picture of what that might look like, and then break it down to what you can do in the next 12 months establish your annual goals. And then I know in our world, we, we map things out with 90 day targets. We do things quarterly and what can we get done? And the next three months, what, what can we do that moves us towards that annual you know, that annual set of goals, what moves us towards that greater vision? And then, you know, each week, and more importantly, probably each day, there’s an action plan that proactively is designed to move incrementally towards those bigger targets.
And, and I think a lot of people, they may establish dreams. They may establish some sort of abstract goal, but they don’t break it down to the daily plans of kind of inching their way forward and gaining ground each and every day. It’s it it’s very much like, you know, somebody in interested in sports, I, you know, I mean, you don’t have to hit a home run every day. You don’t have to throw an 80 yard touchdown pass, but you need to gain ground. You need to hit a single, you need to gain a couple of yards each day because cumulatively over time that, that persistence, that willingness to be consistent and see things through will almost guarantee that you get a meaningful, meaningful payoff at the end, because honestly, persistence is a superpower. It’s something that most people just don’t have. They will start and then shift gears to the next shiny object. And they are relentless starters, but not very good finishers. So design the plan. You want to go to commit to being your own architect, but then be willing to follow through and take the necessary steps to get there. And you’re going to be able to, I mean, achieve things that most people would have never even thought.
