One of the things that I love about being a business owner and, you know, I’m sure this really kind of holds true for life in general, but since this is a podcast about businesses, I’m really excited about the fact that being a business owner allows us to really have a disproportionate amount of control or at least influence in achieving the goals that we sit. We have the, the capacity, the ability to, to make decisions, to take actions, to build processes and execute them that will allow us to really achieve goals or at least give us the highest probability of reaching those goals. So, you know, if you say, Hey, I want to make a hundred or 150 or $200,000 a year in personal income. You can certainly set yourself up to do that, but you’re going to have to really take some steps and make some decisions that consistently kind of move you along that path to get there.
If you want to get 100, 200, 300, 400 clients again, there are plenty of people out there that have proven that it’s, it’s a realistic possibility for an independent fitness business, but one of the simplest things that you can do on a daily basis that allow you to really, I think, stack up small wins that lead to big goals is to have what I think of as a decision-making filter, having kind of a a filter that you run, every choice that you’re making through. And what’s great about this is if you do a bit of an audit with your decisions for, you know, anywhere from three days to one week, you’re going to get really, really clear about how you’re doing in this area and see plenty of opportunities for improvement. So you don’t have to kind of consciously do this with, with every decision, every choice for forever. But yeah, once you do it for a little bit, it kind of just becomes an intuitive thing that, that allows you to, to move towards your goals faster and more consistently.
So what’s the decision making filter look like? Well, really, it’s just, just a question. So here’s a simple question you can ask when you were deciding if the choices you’re making are the right ones to lead you toward your, just ask yourself, will this directly help me accomplish X, whatever your goal is without getting outside of my guardrail. So what does that mean? Like without getting outside of my guardrails? Well, I think all of us have our own set of values. Hopefully we have these operating guardrails that we use to make, to make decisions like, and it could be about making business decisions. The, the, that are really founded in integrity. It can be establishing guard rails about how many hours you’re willing to work or what days you’re willing to work or the type of work you’re willing to do. You know, for me, most every decision that I’m making there, there’s a bit of a family filter. I mean, is it going to take me away from spending time with my family? Is it going to force, I mean, work hours or days a way that I don’t want to work, is it going to really take away from some of the personal experiences I want to have with my family? Well, so for me, it might say, well, this helped me grow my business by, by 200% over the next 24 months without getting outside of my group guard rails. And if the answer is no, then I don’t do it. I mean, it’s just a hard, no, this is not a, maybe this is, this is a very binary thing. It’s either, no, I’m not going to do it. Which frankly is most things, or yes, I will do it.
So, you know, I mean, in a day-to-day sense, you know, if your goal is business growth, if it’s generating more revenue, more leads, more personal income, you know, if it’s not generating a lead, if it’s not following up, if it’s not making an offer, if it’s not creating a marketing asset or gathering social proof, it’s probably not going to help you move towards where you want to go. When, when it comes to just growth stuff. Now obviously sustaining the clientele you have building you know, an operating system that you to deliver results consistently through, through a great experience that, you know, that that really kind of facilitates that kind of organic growth. We went over time. And that, that high level of retention and more referrals. Yes. I mean, obviously that’s a piece of the puzzle, but when we’re talking about generating new business directly, if it’s not one of those five things I just alluded to, then you probably shouldn’t be doing it.
And if it’s in those kind of five categories, if it’s not done in a way that that stays within your personal guardrails, then you probably shouldn’t do it. But think about how much time we spend doing things that don’t fit that criteria. Even though we say we want to achieve certain goals, we say, we want to grow our business. We say, we want to have, you know, a higher level of personal income, or we want to hit certain revenue benchmarks. But if you were to do a time audit of your day or of your week, you know, I mean more often than not, you’d be amazed in a negative way about how much time is spent doing things that don’t correlate at all with that type of growth. So if you want to grow your business, start using a decision-making filter, is this directly not, am I trying to find ways to connect the dots so I can rationalize doing this because it might potentially help me, is this directly helping me reach that goal without getting outside of my personal guardrails, because it’s your job as a business owner to produce the results you want. And this is one of the simplest things that you can do to lean in to that producer mindset, to become the producer in your business. So if that’s, if that’s a priority for you to achieve goals, start using a decision making filter.
