Have you ever let your mindset hold you back? Probably a dumb question, right? We all have, every one of us. I don’t care if it’s the most successful person that you know, or you know, that person that you feel like is always underperforming and not reaching your potential. We’ve all battled mindset issues. At some point we’ve all felt like we just weren’t enough throughout my life. At some point or another, I felt like whatever I wanted to accomplish was impossible. At least for me, I didn’t have enough resources to actually get things done. You know, I didn’t have the silver spoon. I didn’t have the war chest of money. I didn’t have backers or investors. Sometimes I felt like I wasn’t smart enough. Maybe I wasn’t talented enough. You know, I didn’t look the part. I didn’t look like some of these people that you see kind of portraying the fitness industry on the cover of men’s health magazine or something like that, you know, or maybe I didn’t have the right background. And, you know, along the way, I think I was conditioned to believe things that, in fact, I think most of us were conditioned to believe things. Just that, that came along with our environment where wherever we were brought up, whatever we were around, you know, I think I was conditioned to believe that money was scarce, right? Like that you know, that, that old phrase money doesn’t grow on trees, right. That getting a stable job was the right thing to do.
I know that as I grew up in a small town, that was one of the things that I think that most, everybody sought out. Okay, what’s a stable job that I can get. That’s gonna have retirement that it’s going to have health insurance that that’s just stable and solid in a business or an organization that’s going to be here for awhile. You know, I think that I was like, most of us taught not to question authority. I mean, we grow up if you’re anywhere around my age, you grow up where you’ve got and teachers and parents that, you know, you’re not supposed to question there there’s a respect factor there. And, and maybe that pendulum swung too far the other way now, but there definitely was a mindset of not questioning authority.
You know, I think there was definitely a common belief that, you know what, we’re not about playing to our strengths. We’re not about standing out. It’s more of a minimize your weaknesses and just be like, somebody else. Why do you need to stand out? Why do you need to be different? And then, you know, the, I know growing up in a small town and maybe this is different for different people, but when you’re around a, an opportunity or a place where maybe opportunities are limited, you, you start to think maybe that’s the limit of what’s available to you. You don’t think bigger, you don’t think of possibilities that that might extend beyond the, you know, the, the 10 mile radius of your geography.
And then, you know, I think a lot of us came, came up thinking that our circumstances were really the dictator of our results or at least our potential results. And then I don’t know, maybe the way that I look at all of this is that being really successful or being wealthy or being at the top of my profession. Well, that’s, that’s for other people. That’s not, for me, I’m just a normal everyday person. And you know a normal environment and greatness is not an option now, I don’t know about you, but, but those are things that seem very familiar to me. And honestly, I think my parents were above average when it comes to supportive. And I think that you know, it was probably a lot worse for a lot of people. Maybe, maybe that sounds familiar to you, or maybe more importantly, you one or more of those feelings yourself.
Well, let me tell you, and hopefully you, you buy into this, but along the way I learned that every one of those are like every one of them, eventually I was able to replace those lies, those kind of anchors, if you will, with truth. So like, okay, I am smart enough. I, that doesn’t mean that, that I’m a genius by any means, but I’m smart enough to accomplish things. If I take action, you know, I’ve got my own unique strengths and talents and, and I can and should build around them that there’s more than enough opportunity. Opportunity is not scarce opportunity is that limited by your geography or by your upbringing. There’s more than enough opportunity available now is more opportunity available to some people than others. Yes, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not opportunity available to all. And then really how I respond to my circumstances is going to be critical in dictating my results. In fact, it’s going to be the biggest factor in dictating my results, not the circumstances themselves or themselves, but how I respond to it.
And then ultimately it’s up to me to do the work. You know, it’s okay to stand out. It’s okay to play to my strengths, but ultimately my outcomes are going to be driven by the work that I do. And honestly, most things are possible. You know, I I’ve had the good fortune to start businesses that have landed on the entrepreneur franchise 500 that have been recognized is Inc magazine, fastest growing small businesses. I’ve shared the stage with some incredibly talented well-known people in front of thousands. I’ve, you know, I’ve written, gosh, at this point 18 books that I’ve authored or coauthored, I’ve done all sorts of things that I would’ve never dreamed in a million years were possible. And sure, you know, I’m never going to be a major league baseball player or play in the NBA or anything like that. There are certain things that may be have prerequisites that I don’t meet, but in truth, most things are possible. And honestly, the resources you bring to the table, you know, they play must much less of a role in the success that you achieve, then the effort and the consistency and the perseverance that you bring.
Of all the businesses that I have started. And there, there are well over 30 at this point, only one time, did I actually go get a bank loan, no investors or anything like that. Only one time did I go get a bank loan to start a business. You know, I never had a big budget to do this everything, even when I had some, some meaningful cashflow and some money put away, never did I treat them something in any other way than a bootstrap bootstrap type of business. And, you know, I’ve seen so many of those businesses grow and become successful. So, you know, I think that that’s one of the things that we always think, well, Hey, I need money to make money, or I need these advantages to, to move forward. And it’s just not true. So look, I still have all the doubts that I alluded to those doubts, those lies. They creep into my mind from time to time. And you know, there are other ones that have kind of forge their own path into my mind from time to time as well. But now I know not to feed them. I don’t let them snowball on me. I don’t believe in them just because there’s a doubt that creeps in. You know, I focus on the truths that have allowed me to achieve any of the successes that I’ve accomplished. I, I focus on the things that, that I’ve got as tangible evidence that I can succeed, that I can do bigger things that I can achieve goals. So when you find your mindset drifting to places that don’t serve you, well, I suggest that you list out your own truths. Like the ones I just shared and focus on those. Look, you can accomplish more than you think, but you have to believe it before you can live.
