Hey, Pat Rigsby here and in today’s episode I wanna talk with you about your evolution. Let’s get started.
Welcome to the Fitness Business School podcast, the show for fitness business owners who want to grow their income, increase their impact and improve their lifestyle. Be sure to listen to the end of this episode because we have a brand new special offer exclusive for listeners. So stay tuned.
No, I’m not talking about science or anything like that. Evolution for the purposes of this or just, how are you growing and evolving and changing as a business owner? And there were a couple things that have happened recently that got me thinking about this. The first was actually an ad I saw for somebody who is running business coaching for gym owners, who was a person in one of our coaching programs who, to be honest, he wasn’t what we would call like a
model student.
And he signed up for a 12 month program back when we did 12 month commitment stuff and bailed on his agreement a couple months in and, you know, made up a host of excuses or whatever else, and didn’t take personal responsibility for much of anything. And I know the way that I’m starting this off, it sounds like I’m being really kind of mean towards this guy, but about a year later, he sent me an email and he said, you know what? I get it. I understand that, I
didn’t take responsibility for some of the things I wasn’t doing, and I was passing the buck. And I understand why this was not the right approach to take. And as a business owner, I don’t enjoy it when it happens with the clients that I serve.
And I thought that that was a, an interesting kind of evolution for him. And hopefully that’s stuff that he’s doing is he carries this over into coaching other clients, right? Like in or other gym owners. I’ve not been in touch with him in at least a couple years. I mean, he was in our programs before
the pandemic and hopefully he’s done well and hopefully he’s out there helping and having an impact. But, I just remembered when I saw that, or it reminded me of how his tone and his position on these things changed. And, when he sent me that second email, it was unprompted, it was not something that certainly he wasn’t in that program anymore, so it’s not like I’m, asking him for some sort of feedback on his evolution.
And, and then the next thing that came up was I was meeting with Carrie Wilkerson in Nashville a couple weeks back, and we were talking about a potential program that, that we’re considering offering in a joint fashion. And Carrie is a person that I’ve known since I started to get into the online side of things and not just have a local business. I met her very early on through Holly and a couple other mutual friends. I knew guys like Craig Ballentine and Pat Beith knew her from a mastermind they were in. And our journeys have probably run parallel in some ways. I’ve kind of stayed in my single lane of the fitness
sports performance health landscape, and did a lot of different things there with only a few slight exits from that area.
But, but the way that I’ve kind of evolved in the type of business, I wanted to own the way that maybe, I’ve looked at business as a whole, that sort of thing.
And her evolution has kind of been a little bit different working with a lot of work at home moms at one point being a highly sought after keynote speaker and then kind of being the engine behind the scenes or, or maybe kind of the, the engine working with some, some other people who had big coaching programs, maybe not behind the scenes, but being internal and being like a lead coach and strategist for a lot of those clients to now working with really successful advanced business owners. And so her evolution ha has probably run parallel the over the timeframe to mine, but it’s been, slightly different audiences, slightly different roles each time, or maybe not even slightly.
Maybe they’re bigger changes. And I think that the other one that comes to mind recently, I’ve been involved in the hiring of a new baseball coach at the university that I used to work at. And I’m on the search committee helping the team that’s doing this at, at the school. And I’m the only non university employee on this committee. And I look back and it was obviously a very long time ago, but yeah, this is a same university that forced me to
resign, which is just a fancy way of firing me without conflict. And did it in a fashion that was not exactly warm and fuzzy, right? Like, it was kind of like, Hey, we’ll have security escort you off campus type of stuff.
And to see how that relationship has evolved. And there have been dozens of very positive steps in the process there. And I’ve
got great excitement and enthusiasm for where the university’s headed and the people that they have in leadership now. And, so I’m really optimistic and excited to help and, and all three of those things I mention that because if you feel stuck or maybe you’ve been kind of only doing things one way for a long time maybe now’s an opportunity to say, okay, knowing what I know now and if I were starting over today, what would I do? Like, what would it
look like? What would my approach look like? What would success look like? And, and maybe now’s an opportunity to, to make some changes.
Maybe now’s a wonderful time to change your approach to marketing or to evolve your business model, or to go and get help from a business coach like me or somebody else, or to completely just reinvent what you’re doing. I’ve kind of stayed in the same general business coaching lane as far as the types of clients I like to work with, because that’s been a universal, I’ve just loved service-minded people people who, who seem to genuinely care for others. And so I’ve not spent
as much time focusing on industries that that may not be a just a default character trait. Whereas, somebody like Carrie Wilkerson’s changed her target market or her audience completely in the time that I’ve known her so I think that so many things have the potential to evolve, but sometimes we just get stuck and we do things the way that we’ve always done them.
We don’t explore ways to solve problems differently or maybe even decide that there are different problems to solve. So if you are not where you want to be, I would tell you that this isn’t some sort of life sentence, right? Like, you have the opportunity to shift, evolve, change, move in a different
direction, whether it’s a couple degrees different or a complete overhaul. And I would say that I can look back in virtually all, not, not universally all, but most of the meaningful shifts that I’ve made in my professional life have ultimately just been springboards to something much better. So even
though change may seem scary usually on the other side of that, that that kind of that that scary valley that you go through, the unknown and the getting out of your comfort zone and all the cliche stuff, on the other side of that is usually something better because you, you get to borrow from all of your experiences that you’ve had the things that you don’t wanna be part of the next step in your journey.
You’ve learned things, you’ve built relationships. All these things are assets that you get to use to create the 2.0 or 3.0 version of whatever it is that you’re going to do professionally. So just maybe a different way to think about things today because yeah, I mean, we can talk about tactics and all those
things and they can certainly have a meaningful impact, but sometimes we just need to be willing to evolve to whatever that next iteration of us and our business looks like.
