Doug Spurling – Show Notes
Doug is president and founder of Spurling Fitness. Originally from Haverhill, Massachusetts he moved to Southern Maine to attend University of New England. While at UNE he played semi-professional football on the side, worked full time in a gym, attended conferences, and read every book he could on performance and fat loss. He graduated from University of New England with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Exercise Science in 2010. Following UNE, Doug enrolled in United States Sports Academy’s (USSA) Master of Sports Science program, and received his graduate degree in 2015. He has several years of experience as a personal trainer for general fitness and a strength and conditioning coach for athletes. His certifications from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) include Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and Certified Personal Trainer (CPT).
Doug started out in as a physical therapy aid when he was just 14 years old and then transitioned into working with Alzheimers and dementia patients throughout high school. After leaving high school and struggling with his own weight, he started working with a mentor in college and was introduced to the world of fitness, working in a commercial gym.
Doug has always been interested in business and was able to identify that in Maine there wasn’t a lot of competition in gym facilities that actually helped the members; instead they only just rented them equipment to use.
“I decided to jump right in and rented a warehouse and started from zero clients and built it from there!”
Two years ago, Doug was able to purchase the building he is in now, which provides 6500 square feet of space plus a large outdoors space to host his 300 clients to date.
In the first few years of running the business he was able to establish a gorilla marketing plan and develop a structured internship program, hire staff members and then had the opportunity to niche down.
“There were three of us so that really allowed me to step slightly away from the business to work on systems; I think is really what shot us forward.”
Doug credits having really clear goals and a vision with getting him to where he is today in life and business!
